Elizabeth] by Thomas ap Richard of Bwlch y Beydu, Denbighshire, gent., in a dispute between David ap Rees ap gruffith lloyd of Llanrwst, yeo[man], William ap Rees ap gruff lloyd of Scrogennan, and Low[ ] ... widow, mother of the said William, relating to messuages and lands in Llanddoged and Gwytherin, late of Rees ap gruff lloyd deceased; a lease for life, temp. Elizabeth, from Richard lloid of Sweney, Salop, gent., to Richard Burley of the same, yeo[man], of mays yr hen westyn in Sweney.

A scrap-book compiled by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing poetry in strict and free metres by poets from Caernarfonshire. Among the poets represented in the volume are Gwilym Ddu (o) Arfon (fl. c. 1280-1320), David Jones ('Dewi Fardd'), Trefriw, Hugh Evans ('Hywel Eryri'), Griffith Williams, Penmaenmawr, John (Ioan) Rowland(s), Pentir, William Owen ('Gwilym Ddu Glan Hafren'), [John Roberts] 'Sion Lleyn', Hugh Jones, Pen-y-groes, Llanwnda, Morris Roberts ('Eos Llyfnwy'), Llanllyfni, John Jones ('Ioan Glan Cledr'), Caernarvon, W[illiam] M[orris] Hughes ('Gwawdrydd'), Bangor, [G. Written on the inside lower cover is a long note by O[wen] Williams, Fronheulog, Waunfawr, 1857, of which the following is an extract, - 'Myfi a gesglais gynhwysedd y llyfr hwn o'r hen ysgrifiau a ddaeth i'm dwylaw oeddynt eiddo Dafydd Ddu Eryri ac a delais am eu rhwymo yn nghyd megys y gwelir yma er's llawer o flynyddoedd yn ol ...'.

Five files of unbound leaves containing titles and first lines of poems by mediaeval Welsh strict metre bards. The bards are arranged in alphabetical order of names and, in their present order, Cwrtmawr MSS 726-7 and Cwrtmawr MSS 728-30 appear to comprise two separate indexes. The compiler - inferentially working on manuscripts in the British Museum - has not recorded the shelf and page numbers of their source material; however, there are some such references and other insets and additions in the hand of J. H. Davies.

The volume may be in the hand of John Pughe of Kedris, whose name occurs twice: 'John Pughe his hand 1731', (p. 12) and 'John Pughe of Kedris his hand 1732' (p. 16).

The remainder is in several hands of the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. There are copious annotations by William Maurice and some additions and annotations by Cadwaladr Dafydd, Llanymowddwy (1747) and L[ewis] Morris ('Llewelyn Ddu o Fôn', 1701-65).

Transcripts by J. R. Jones (according to the entry in Cwrtmawr MS 1488B, see also Cwrtmawr 1000C) of 'cywyddau' and 'awdlau' by Deio ap Ieuan Ddu, Huw Cae Llwyd, Dafydd Nanmor, Dafydd ap Edmwnt and Rhys Goch Eryri. There is a typewritten list of contents at the beginning and the volume also contains a letter, [19]07, from T[homas] Roberts, Borth Fechan, Portmadoc to Mr [J. H.] Davies (returning the transcripts of the Dafydd Nanmor poems).

A volume containing poetry ('cywyddau', 'englynion', etc.) and a few prose items transcribed by the Reverend Owen Jones (1833-99) from various manuscript and printed sources, chiefly NLW MS 644 ('Llyfr Robert Hwmffra'), NLW MS 560 (Celynog 34), which is referred to here as 'MSS D', Bangor MS 15599, referred to here as 'MSS B = S[iôn] P[owel]', and a manuscript referred to as 'Bodilan MSS'. The Bodilan manuscript appears to have been written by Robert Thomas, 1730, and the poets, instances of whose work have been transcribed from this source, include Iolo Goch, Dafydd ab Gwilym, Madoc ap grono gethin, Mredydd Brydydd, Dafydd Nanmor, John Cent, D[r] G[ruffudd] R[oberts], Hugh Arwystl, Howel ab Surr Mathew, William ab Sion Wyn, D. M,, Efan ab Ridsiard, Robert John Evan, E. Thomas, Edward Davies, [Siôn Tudur], John Philips, Dr. [?Sr] Gr. fain, Lewis Lloyd, E. ?M., Moris ab Robert or Bala, Lewis Sion, William Humphrey and Thomas Lloyd ienga o Benma(e)n. The prose items include 'Achau'r Cwrw ai fonedd ai Hanes ai Gyneddfau ai wrthiau' from an unnamed source. There is also a copy of 'Cywydd am Enedigaeth a dyfodiad ein Iachawdwr Iesu Grist i'r byd yn y Cnawd ...' by Huw Huws o Fon (source not given).

A composite volume written almost entirely in the autograph of Evan Prichard ('Ieuan Lleyn' or 'Bardd Bryncroes'; 1769-1832), with some additions by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). The volume is in two parts, the first part (pp. 1-198) containing poetry mainly by Ieuan Lleyn, with some items also by John Jones, Glan y Gors (beginning wanting), R. Ll. Ddu, Cyllidydd, Pwllheli, 1821, Morrus Dwyfech alias Morrus ab Ifan ab Einion, Owen Gruffydd, Thomas Glyn Llifon, Rich[ar]d Hughes, Cadwaladr Cesail, Sion Roger, D. Drefriw and G. Other items in the first part include a draft of a letter, undated, from Evan Pr[ichard] [i.e. 'Ieuan Lleyn'] to an unnamed correspondent (p. 89) (a request for [the mastership of] the free school belonging to the parishes of Rhiw, Bryncroes, Aberdaron and Llanfaelrhys if W[illia]m Owen is turned out), a (?)copy of a letter, 1791, from Ieuan Rich[ar]d, Ty Mawr to an unnamed correspondent whom he addresses as 'Enwog Fardd' (p. 95) (he was unable to attend the Eisteddfod held at Llanrwst; verse in strict and free metre), a (?)translation of a speech by Mr Hodgins [sic], an operative cotton spinner, respecting the Combination Laws, and a speech in Welsh on freedom ('From Walter Davies's Essay [Rhyddid (1791) ]'). The pages following (i.e. 191-8) appear to be in the autograph of John Roberts ('Siôn Lleyn'). Between part I and part II are some items (press cuttings, poetry, etc.) inserted by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), including 'Gwaith Siarl Marc'. Preceding a number of blank pages are two letters from Ieuan Lleyn to Siôn Lleyn, the one undated (?copy), the other written in 1791 from Ty Mawr to Mr John Roberts at Rhyd y clafrdy, Lleyn, containing lines in the 'cywydd' metre by 'Ieuan Fardd Bryncroes' (another of the bardic names used by Ieuan Lleyn). Part II is in three sections, the first consisting of 90 pp. and containing poetry by Gronwy Ddu o Fôn, Robert ab Gwilym [Robert Williams ('Robert ap Gwilym Ddu')], Llanystumdwy, Hywel ab Reinallt, Hywel ab Daf. ab Ieuan ab Rhys, W[illia]m Lleyn, Rhys Llwyd ab Rhys ab Ricart, Deio ab Ieuan Du, Tudur Aled, H. ab O. Gwynedd, John Fychan o Gaergai, Thomas Llwyd or penman, M.D.(qr. There are copies of the Lord's Prayer and the Apostles Creed in Breton and Cornish on pages 34-6. This section was written c. 1797-99 at Llangian and at Llanddeiniolen, where it was completed 31 May 1799 (p.90). Part IIb comprises 38 pp. and contains poetry by Ieuan Lleyn, Huw Ifan Gynt o Lanllyfni alias Hywel Eryri, y Parchedig Evan Evans alias Ieuan y Prydydd hir and W[illiam Evans or Fedw arian, preceded by a list of contents. The final section (pp. 11-54) contains poetry by Siôn Dafydd Laes (John Davies alias Penllyn), Lewis Owain o Dyddyn y Garreg, Syr Rhys or Drewenn, Gutto Glynn, S[ion] Tud[ur], D. Gwilym [Dafydd ap Gwilym], Griffith Philyp 'o Ardudwy y' Meirion', Daf[y]dd Thomas alias Daf[y]dd Ddu or Eryri, Ieuan Deulwyn 'o blwyf Pendeulwyn Gerllaw Cydweli Caerfyrddin', Lewis Glyn cothi, Thomas Prys P[la]s Iolyn, Tomas Derllys 'am a wn i' and Rhys Ednyfed, followed by a sketch of a ship ('Debora'), verses entitled 'Brynau [sic] Iwerddon', etc. and 'Sylwiadau ar Wneuthyriad Dyn'. A volume of poetry in strict and free metre in the autograph of John Roberts ('Siôn Lleyn') entitled 'Gemmau yr Awen sef Casgliad o Waith John ab Robert Neu Siôn Lleyn 1783' and described by him as 'Gwaith boreu fy oes, tra anmherffaith a llawer wedy ei Adsgrif o hono ai Drwsiau - pasiwch heibio ir gwallau yw Dymuniad J. Roberts'. Other poets represented are Walter Davies, Robert Prichard, Melin Sôch ('Robin 'r Aber'), J. Roberts, Melinydd, Llan degai, Dafydd Sion Jamas ('Dewi Deudraeth'), [David Thomas] 'D[afydd] Ddu', Robert Hughes, Rice Jones o'r Blaenau, D. ab Gwilim, Huw Llwydmor, Risiart Jones o fôn, Evan Owen, Glan y llynnau, Llanystumdwy, Jonathan Hughes, Hugh Hughes o Fôn, Michael Prichard, [Evan Evans] 'Ieuan Brydydd hir' and Owen Griffith. Some of the poems by Siôn Lleyn are of Calvinistic Methodist interest e.g. 'Hannes Goffadwriaethol am farwolaeth Mr Griffies [sic] o'r Bermo a dau oi Blant, ynghyd a byrr hanes or Efengyl yno 1786' (p. 58), and 'Pennillion yn dymmuno llwyddiant Robert Jones yn ei Siwrna i Lundain (ar ddymuniad y Gymdeithas Grefyddol o Gymru) i Draddodi gair y Bywyd iddynt yn y flwyddyn 1779' (p. 117).

Two notebooks in the autograph of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing transcripts of 'cywyddau', etc. by the following poets: Wiliam Llyn, Huw Llyn, Morys Dwyfech, Lewis Daron, Sion Wyn Owain, Kadwaladr Kesel, Huw Machno, Edmwnd Prys, Sion Philipp, Gruffydd Phylips, Huw Pennant, Lewis Menai, Wiliam Kynwal, Rissiart Philip, Richard Kynwal, Rhus Kain, Howel Reinallt, Sion Brwynog, Watkin Klewedog, Morgan ap Huw Lewis, Inco Brydydd, Dafydd Na[n]mor, Gruffudd Grug, Iolo Goch, Owain Waed da and Llywelyn Goch ap Meurig hên. Nearly all the poems are eulogies of, or elegies on , persons from Llŷn and Eifionydd. On the first page of MS 507 is the following note by J. H. Davies: 'Codwyd o lawysgrif Mr J. Glyn Davies ? Gan Myrddin Fardd' and it seems probable that the contents of MS 507 and the first ten items in MS 508 were transcribed from J. Glyn Davies MS 2 (though not in the same order), perhaps with a view to publication. The remaining poems appear to have been transcribed from various sources, including Cwrtmawr MS 454. Pasted in after the poems in MS 508 are two newspaper cuttings relating to 'Phylipiaid Ardudwy'.

A composite volume lettered on the spine 'Llenorion Lleyn ac Eifionydd' and described in the old typewritten handlist of Cwrtmawr Manuscripts as 'Llyfr Cywyddau etc. R. Llys Padrig. etc. fol.' The first part is in an early nineteenth century hand or hands (watermarks 1803 and 1804) and contains a list of sheriffs for Caernarvonshire to 1796; a list of arms; and 'cywyddau', etc. by Rhisiart Cynwal, Gruffydd Phylip, Sion Dafydd Las o Nanau, Owen Gruffydd, Lewis Menai, Ieuan Tew, Sion Tudur, Sion Phylip, Edmwnd Prys, Ieuan Llwyd, Gruffydd Hafren and Watcin Clywedog. The remainder of the manuscript (from p. 56 to the end) is almost entirely of later date and is written in the autograph of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') and others; this section includes 'cywyddau', 'englynion', etc. by some of the poets already mentioned and by Ffoulk Wyn 'yn enw Owen Madryn y Crwner', Owain Waed Da, W[illiam] Llyn, Evan ap Tudur Penllyn, Howel ap Feinallt, Morys ap Ifan ap Einion o Lyn, Owain ap Llewelyn ap y Moel, Gruffydd Grug, Dafydd Llwyd ap Llywelyn ap Gruffydd o Fathafarn, Robin y prydydd bach, Huw Pennant, Sion Cain, Iolo Goch, Sion Brwynog (incomplete), Huw Llyn, Syr Dafydd Trefor, Ieuan ap Madog ap Dafydd, Tudur Penllyn, [Lewis Môn] (beginning only), Hugh ap Risiart ap Dd, Morys Dwyfech, Cadwaladr Gruffydd, Gruffydd Bodwrdda, Rowland Hugh, Lewis Glynn, Dafydd Namor [sic] o blwy Beddgelert, Howel Ceiriog, Wiliam Cynwal, D. Robert [sic] 'Sion Lleyn'. Inset are 'Cywydd i Ddafydd Owain o'r Gaerwen ymhlwyf Llanystumdwy yn Eifionydd, swydd Gaernarfon, (Bardd ieuangc yr hwn a ddychanodd D. Ddu o Eryri am iddo esgeuluso dyfod i ymweled ag ef pan fu yn rhoddi tro yn Eifionydd yn 1801 - y rhan gyntaf o'r Co. gan Wm. Jones. Bardd ieuangc o Bentraeth yn Môn, y rhan olaf gan fardd o Arfon', dated 'Llanddeiniolen near Caernarvon Septr. 4th. 1802' and addressed to 'Mr. O. Jones, No. 148 Upper Thames Street, London' [? in the autograph of David Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri')] and an extract from [Yr Eurgrawn Wesleyaidd, 1824], pp. 341-6 ('Hanes Cantref y Gwaelod', etc.). Some of the poems are said to be copied from the manuscript of Rhys Jones 'o'r Blaenau' and William Elias, Plas y Glyn, Anglesey.

A composite volume containing poetry by John Roberts ('Sion Lleyn'), 1768-71, Dafydd ap Gwilym, Owen Ellis (Nant), Will. Jones y gwydd, Mathew Owen, Huw Rober[t]s, John Dafydd, Syr Rhys yr offeiriad (llanfair), Owen Gruffydd, J. Rhydderch, Wm Elias, Edward Moris, Ifan Gruffydd leiaf, G[utto'r] Glyn, Einian ap Gwalchmai, D[afydd] Nanmor, William Phylip, Huw ab Ifan, Edmund Prys, Gruffydd Phylip, [Robert Prichard] 'Robin Raber', Dafydd Owain o'r Gaerwen ('Marwnad Robert Roberts Pregethwr enwog yn mhlith y Methodistiaid ...') and Gronwy Owen, followed by a collection of the poems of the Reverend Mr Gronwy Owen ('Casgliad o waith y Parch. Mr Gronwy Owen, a Alwei ei hun Gronwy Ddu o Fôn'), with items by [Evan Evans] 'Ieuan Brydydd hir', Huw Huws Alias y Bardd Coch o Fôn, Lewis Morys (poetry and a letter) and Rhobert Huws o Benmynydd ('Robin ddu o Fon'). The contents also include some pedigrees (Achau Penyberth, Richard Llwyd o Griciaith, Bach y Saint, Penllech., Wern Penmorfa, Mostyn, Cors-y-Gedol, Castell-march, Cefn-Llanfair, Wern fawr, Penarth. etc.), 'Ychydig o hanesion' ('Am feibion Noa', etc.), miscellaneous notes, weaving patterns etc. The volume is written in several hands: pp. 1-84 are probably in the autograph of John Roberts ('Siôn Lleyn'); pp. 117-124 are in the autograph of Robert Prichard ('Robin 'Raber') and most of the remainder, if the lettering on the spine is correct, could be in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion').

A copy of Charles Ashton: Gweithiau Iolo Goch gyda nodiadau hanesyddol a beirniadol (Croesoswallt, 1896), with annotations, some if not all by J. H. Davies. Inside the volume is a notebook probably in the autograph of Charles Ashton containing a list of the poems of Iolo Goch, with particulars of sources, etc., a shorter list in the autograph of D. Silvan Evans with a reference to a manuscript (then at Llanwrin, now Cwrtmawr MS 325) in the autograph of Wiliam Henri [sic] Mounsey, 1859, and a letter, [19]22, from Henry Lewis, Swansea to Principal [J. H.] Davies.
