Wage disputes,

Material relating to wage disputes dealt with by the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association. Material includes meeting notices; strike notices; summaries of claims for compensation owing to loss of output during stoppages; particulars relating to stoppages at specific collieries; and correspondence and papers relating to Conciliation Board negotiations, appointments, and joint recommendations and resolutions.

Typical disputes,

Material relating to typical employment disputes at member companies, in which these companies sought the advice of the Association before submission to the Joint Disputes Committee. Material comprises mainly correspondence, usually between the company or colliery involved and the Association, and often with the South Wales Miners' Federation. Companies concerned include the Powell Dyffryn Steam Coal Co., the Amalgamated Anthracite Collieries, Evans & Bevan Ltd., the United National Collieries, the Brynhenllis Colliery, the Tredegar Iron and Coal Co., and the Thomas Merthyr Colliery Co.

Swansea District Board,

Minute books of the Swansea District Board of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association. The minutes cover a range of activities, such as the Board's considerations of claims for compensation made by members within the district; passing resolutions embodying its recommendations on these claims for the consideration of Association meetings; conducting preliminary hearings on individual disputes; pursuing investigations of disputes and agreeing on settlements; consideration of reports from members; preliminary consideration of applications to join, or leave, the Association; annual revision of Assurances of members; the election of officers and the implementation of Association policy within the district.

Summaries,

Annual summaries (March-March) of information submitted by the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association, giving details of membership, assured output, the number of pits in each district, and the names of Association members serving on various boards and committees.

Show cards,

Reply forms, labelled 'A' and 'B', which were sent to colliery companies to collect information on the activities of the South Wales Miners' Federation regarding the holding of "Show Cards" on colliery premises to promote union membership. Some letters and circulars may be found within the volumes.

Material relating to various aspects of the coalmining industry in general, and to matters concerning the Coal Owners Association, such as wage rates, taxation, the improvement of docks and railways, the Sliding Scale, accidents, disputes and strikes at collieries throughout South Wales. Material includes Board, Council, and committee minutes; circulars; notices; reports; letters; bills and newspaper cuttings.

Revision of assurances,

Material comprises forms filled out annually by Association Members, giving the names of the various pits which they wished to have assured under the rules of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association, together with the annual quantity to be assured and the rate per ton at which it was to be assured. Some volumes may include related letters and correspondence. Returns for 1888 are missing.

Reports and papers,

Material relating to various aspects of coal mining in South Wales including the survey of coal resources, the formal inspection of mines and their activities, deputations to national representatives regarding coal mining issues, the attendence of special industry meetings and conferences, participation in trade schemes, and the promotion of coal research. Material includes reports, surveys, memoranda, competition entries and essays, pamphlets, marketing material and other printed items.

Rates of pay,

Statistical tables giving detailed information on the rates of pay for different classes of workmen throughout the South Wales coalfield. Schedules are given for associated and non-associated collieries in the Cardiff, Newport and Swansea districts. Classes of workmen include: Enginemen, Pumpmen, Company's Boys, Colliers' Boys, Timbermen, Assistant Timbermen, Rippers, Assistant Rippers, Blocklayers, Roadmen, Hauliers, Trammers, Riders, Hitchers, Labourers, Ostlers, Fitters, Electricians, Rope Splicers, Masons, Pitmen, Shacklers and Spragmen, Lamplockers, Lamplighters, Oilers, Coalcuttermen, Airwaymen, Watermen, Cogcutters and Timber Drawers.

Railway Rates Tribunal,

Papers relating to the court of the Railway Rates Tribunals held under the Railways Act, 1921, and the Road and Rail Traffic Act, 1933. Later Tribunals were also held under the Local Government Act, 1929, the Railway Freight Rebates Act, 1936, and the London Passenger Transport Act, 1933. Proceedings involved a number of railway companies including the Great Western Railway Company; Southern Railway Company; London Midland and Scottish Railway Company; and the London and North Eastern Railway Company. Files may contain minutes of proceedings, notes on proceedings, judgements, schedules of standard railway charges, provisional proposals by railway companies, Railway Clearing House statements, reviews of the operation of the Railway Freight Rebate Scheme, and classification lists of merchandise carried by rail.

Price lists,

Material comprises mainly printed lists, which give the agreed prices for working a particular seam in a particular colliery in a given way (i.e. hand cut or machine cut). Some material includes statements by the Statistical Department giving additional information regarding proceeds, wages costs, and credit per ton for the periods specified (see S3/16).

Pitwood Department,

Files created by the Pitwood Department relating to the supply and transportation of pitwood for use in Welsh collieries. Material comprises mainly correspondence, written between the Coal Owners Association and the Forestry Commission, the Cardiff and Bristol Channel Pitwood Importers Association, the Great Western Railway Co., the Ministry of Supply, and the Mining Association of Great Britain Timber Advisory.

Official press reports,

Material comprises official press reports publicising meetings of various Coal Owners Association committees, and of meetings between the Coal Owners' representatives and representatives of several trade unions, including meetings with the National Union of Clerks and the Colliery Examiners Association.

Newport District Board,

Minute books of the Newport District Board of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association. The minutes cover a range of activities carried out by the members of the Board, such as the Board's considerations of claims for compensation made by members within the district; the passing of resolutions embodying its recommendations on these claims for the consideration of Association meetings; conducting preliminary hearings on individual disputes and pursuing investigations of disputes (including stoppages at the mines); consideration of reports from members and external committees; preliminary consideration of applications to join, or leave, the Association; carrying out annual revisions of Assurances of members; the election of officers and the implementation of Association policy within the district.

National Conciliation Board for the Coal Mining Industry,

Material related to the work of the National Conciliation Board for the Coal Mining Industry comprising minutes of proceedings of the National Board for the Coal Industry, 1921, with awards, interpretations and the Constitution and Rules of Procedure of the Board; and minutes, agenda and papers for meetings of the Joint National Negotiating Committee, 1944-1945. Also included is an Agreement, 1943, between the Mining Association, Miners' Federation of Great Britain, the various owners' associations, and the various workmen's associations, to establish the National Conciliation Scheme.
