Commercial Department,

Administrative files created and kept by the Commercial Department of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association. The department dealt mainly with commercial aspects of coal mining, which included the maintenance and use of railway wagons for coal transport, the negotiation of special railway rates and dock charges for the transport and shipping of coal, the negotiation with foreign countries for the exchange of Welsh coals for pitwood during wartime, the loading of coal and provision of special machinery at docks, compliance with government legislation on the health and safety of miners, negotiations with miners' groups on wages and holidays, and representation in the Mining Association of Great Britain.
