Llwydiarth, Llangedwyn (Montgomeryshire parishes) and other Montgomeryshire estate administration papers,

Estate administration papers belonging mainly to the Llwydiarth estate and the Montgomeryshire portion of the Llangedwyn estate, comprising expired tenancy agreements and associated papers, 1839-1929; and miscellaneous estate administration papers, [16]83-1888. Note that the expired lease agreements (apparently in their original arrangement) also incorporate a large number of items belonging to the Mathafarn, Tirymynech and Rhiwsaeson estates; and the miscellaneous estate papers include some items relating to Glan-llyn, Merioneth.

Estate administration papers deriving from management mainly of the Arwystli and Cyfeiliog estates in western Montgomeryshire, comprising expired tenancy agreements and associated papers, 1839-1912; papers relating to property purchases, 1691-1858; and miscellaneous estate administration papers, 1789-1913.

Miscellaneous estate and household administration papers,

Papers relating to various aspects of estate and household administration, mainly of Wynnstay and the house in St James’s Square, London. Many of them date from the time of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, 4th Bart. There are also papers and correspondence concerning the various other estates belonging to Wynnstay and occasionally non-Wynnstay estates. As many of the papers cover more than one estate at a time, they have been listed according to type, comprising miscellaneous estate administration papers, 1682-1911; agents’ correspondence (main series), 1777-1813; general bills and receipts, 1639-1789; household account books, 1768-1857; and various inventories and catalogues, 1749-1946.

Family and personal correspondence of the Wynn family of Gwydir, 1599-1695; Sir William Williams of Glascoed (Speaker Williams), 1671-1699; Sir William Williams of Llanforda, 1701-1737; the Williams Wynn family, 1719-1744, 1859; and the families of Thelwall, Kyffin, Vaughan and others, 1571-1913. The subjects are focussed mainly on family life, estate matters, private financial arrangements, local and national current affairs, the correspondents’ professional legal careers and their public posts in county administration.

Legal papers, Vaughan family of LLwydiarth,

Legal papers from disputes of the Vaughan family of Llwydiarth with various adversaries, 1600-1716. The series comprise: miscellaneous cases of the Vaughan family, 1600-1664; disputes of Vaughan family and the Price family over the title to properties in Eglwysegl, Dinbren and Trefor Isaf, 1604-1664; disputes about the Llwydiarth estates, involving Sir Robert Vaughan and Edward Vaughan, 1616-1669; disputes about the Llwydiarth estates, involving Charles Salesbury and other trustees of Edward Vaughan, 1650-1669; disputes about the Llwydiarth estates, involving William and Gabriel Salesbury and other trustees of Edward Vaughan, 1666-1675; and disputes over Llwydiarth and other estates involving Edward Vaughan, 1666-1716. Several of the more substantial cases are interrelated, continuing from one generation of estate owners and trustees to the next, e.g. the claims by Magdalen and Katherine Salesbury, and Sir Charles Lloyd and his sons (alias Vaughan).

Papers deriving from legal disputes mainly concerning inheritance and the recovery of debts and legacies, involving Sir William Williams of Llanforda, 1674-1735, [1769], and Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, [1792]-1793.

Miscellaneous legal cases and pardons,

Two series of documents deriving from the processes of the law in England and Wales. The first comprises papers accumulated during the proceedings of miscellaneous lawsuits, mainly equity cases in the courts of the Council in the Marches of Wales, Chancery, the Great Sessions and the Exchequer, 1509-1819, and involving some of the prominent families associated with Wynnstay, such as Purcell of Nantcriba, Wynn of Gwydir, and Kyffin of Glascoed, as well as Pugh of Mathafarn. The second series consists entirely of pardons for various misdemeanours, granted by the Crown or by peers who had the power of legal jurisdiction in particular lordships, 1458-1690.

Records of the manorial court of Much Wenlock, comprising a near-complete series of court leet presentments, 1786-1857; a small number of suit rolls, 1770-1787, 1823-1857 (with gaps); and miscellaneous manorial records, 1614, 1669-1677, 1821.

Original, draft and copy marriage settlements, and other family settlements of the Wynn family of Gwydir, 1578-1681, of the Williams family of Chwaen Isaf and Llanforda, and their descendants the Williams Wynn family of Wynnstay, 1664-1859, together with the families who were related to them by marriage, namely Eyton of Watstay, 1499-1687, Thelwall of Plas y Ward, 1515-1708, Kyffin of Glascoed, 1546-1675, and Vaughan of Llwydiarth, 1569-1719, with related deeds and documents associated with disentailment and resettlement. Endorsements: Most of the documents are endorsed with notes of contents and several have original reference numbers allocated by the estate.
