Biographical history

John Roberts (d. 1824) of Bangor was a solicitor and deputy-registrar, and also sub-treasurer to the Dean and Chapter of Bangor Cathedral.

Archival history

Some of the manuscripts were acquired by Roberts during the course of his work; others, e.g. NLW MSS 1256D, 1258C and 1260B, originally Maesyporth manuscripts, were probably obtained by Roberts through his marriage to Anne, daughter of Evan Lloyd, Maesyporth, Llangeinwen, Anglesey (NLW Wynnstay MS 2 is also a Maesyporth manuscript).

Immediate source of acquisition or transfer

NLW MSS 1243-7D, 1256-61, 1263-4E: Frank Crowe, The Welsh Book Depot; Wrexham; Purchase; November 1915.
