The Rev. Rees Jenkin Jones, Unitarian minister, schoolmaster, historian and hymn-writer, of Aberdare, was born in 1835, the eldest son of the Rev. John Jones. He was descended on his mother's side from the Jones family of Llwyn-rhys, pioneers of nonconformity in Cardiganshire. He was educated at his father's school, Carmarthen Presbyterian College, 1855-1859, and the University of Glasgow, 1859-1862, where he obtained an MA in 1863. He succeeded his father as minister of the Old Meeting House and taught at Trecynon Seminary but resigned due to ill-health in 1872. In 1876 he was Professor of Classics at the Presbyterian College, Carmarthen, and also acting Principal. He married Anne Griffiths in 1877.
He edited Yr Ymofynydd, 1873-1879, 1881-1887. In 1879 he resumed his duties at the Old Meeting House and at Trecynon Seminary. He retired from the ministry in 1909. He contributed regularly to periodicals, mostly on Unitarian and historical matters and contributed to the Dictionary of National Biography. He died in Aberdare in 1924.
