Note

The Family Law Act of 1996 was intended to denote a shift towards 'no-fault' divorce as opposed to the fault-based approach of the 1973 Matrimonial Causes Act. The main part of the 1996 Act, which related to divorce, was not proceeded with after pilot schemes found it did not work efficiently.

The Family Homes and Domestic Violence Bill of 1995 proposed to introduce non-molestation orders and occupation orders whose aim was to provide protection for one or more family members against the violence or abuse of another and to regulate the occupation of the family home in the event of relationship breakdown. The Bill was eventually unsuccessful due to opposition from a Conservative minority concerned at the Bill's undermining of what they regarded as traditional family values.
