Scope and content

Thank you very much for your letter of the 30th of Rabi al-Avval in reply to my letter of the 25th of Rabi al-Avval informing me that when the vakil of Januji Bhonsalah had arrived at Azimabad he had written to you and you were enclosing a copy of the above mentioned letter for me. I came to know from this letter that Maharajah Shitab Rae had met this Vakil and had disclosed our secrets to him and that the Vakil, who is appointed by us at the court of Januji Bhonsalah, had not as yet left Azimabad. Therefore your officials had written to the aforesaid Maharajah, I too should have also told the Maharajah, that he should have avoided this happening. You have also indicated that you do not approve of the delay in the departure of the Vakil from Azimabad even if the delay was due to the collection of presents. It was necessary to send the Vakil to the Maharajah Sahib as soon as possible. -- My dear Sir, as soon as I arrived here I met our Vakil Mirza Zain al-Abidin Khan and I emphasised to him the need to depart immediately. When the Vakil of Maharajah Bonsalah arrived here he informed me that he had heard that you had appointed a vakil to discuss the issue of the chauth of the province of Orissa and that he had left to see Marajah Sahib and that he had also arrived from the aforesaid Maharajah and would like to take leave and return to Maharaja Januji now and participate in the discussions with our vakil there. When I heard all this from him I was surprised and did not know how he could get all this information. When I enquired he told me that before coming to meet me he had written to you and had brought another letter for me. This letter was later on sent to you by me. I am writing another letter to Mirza Zain al-Abidin to depart immediately. Please do let me know what other steps I should take in this matter. -- Enclosure: [Gold sprinkles]. -- Whatever was possible, I have written to Maharajah Shitab Rae. The Maharaja accuses me of discussing the matter of chauth with the vakil. I have written to him that he should know that if I had discussed this matter with him he would have known that Zain al-Abdin was leaving as our vakil.
