Brut y Brenhined,

A composite, imperfect text made up of parts of two independent manuscripts, with the early chapters by a third hand; all three hands belong to the same type or school of writing, and cannot be separated by many years.
Hand A (pp. i, 1-25) has 21 lines to the page, with two-line rubric initials to chapters. This is the work of a hand like that in British Museum Caligula MS A. III, i.e. the C manuscripts of the Laws. These early folios were probably written to fill in the lacuna at the beginning of the principal fragment; however, the first and second folios are now wanting. The text corresponds with p. 477, col. 1, l. 5 to p. 482, col. ii, l. 15 of the Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales (Denbigh, 1870). Hand B (pp. 26-101, 146-205) has 30 lines to the page with two-line rubric chapter initials, and rubric headings to certain chapters as in the Myvyrian Archaiology, p. 482, col. ii, l. 15 to p. 511, col. i, l. 29, (531-3), 534-7, l. 3, [lacuna] 538, l. 30 to 539, col. ii, l. 21, (539, col. ii, l. 21 to 540), [lacuna] 541, col. ii to 542, l. 41), [lacuna] (543, col. i-ii, l. 12), 543, col. ii, l. 13 to 545, col. i, (545, col. ii to 547, col. ii, l. 32), 547, col. ii, l. 33 to 553, col. ii, l. 28, (553, col. ii, l. 29 to 554) (where bracketed figures denote text which is summarised in the Myvyrian Archaiology). Hand C (pp. 102-145) has 32 lines to the page, with rubric chapter initials floriated with green, now faded. These folios form the ivth and vth quires of Peniarth MS 44. The text of this version is not in close agreement with that in the Myvyrian Archaiology (p. 510, col. i, l. 48 to p. 531), though the wording is frequently nearly the same. There is a folio wanting between pp. 131 and 132, and between pp. 139 and 140.

Brut y Brenhinedd

The Welsh text of Brut y Brenhinedd written by the scribe of the Book of Taliesin (NLW Peniarth MS 2) during the first half of the fourteenth century. The text is followed by the pedigree of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd.

Dares Phrygius, Brut y Brenhinedd & Brut y Tywysogion

The Welsh texts of Dares Phrygius (ff. 1-23 verso), Brut y Brenhinedd (ff. 24-141 verso), and Brut y Tywysogion (ff. 142-206 verso), written in a hand of the second half of the fourteenth century.

Genedigaeth y Brenin Arthur

A fragment corresponding to chapters III, IV & V in the First Book of Malory's Morte Darthur. This version differs in many important particulars from those tabulated in Dr Sommer's Morte Darthur, Vol. III. Peniarth MS 215, pp. 317-348, appears to be a direct, but inaccurate, copy from this original. This text is printed in Y Cymmrodor, Vol. XXIV, pp. 250-258.

An early version of the translation of Geoffrey of Monmouth's 'Historia Regum Britanniae'.
This text was edited by Henry Lewis and published by the University of Wales Press Board in 1942 (see Brut Dingestow, ed. by Henry Lewis (Cardiff: University of Wales Press, 1942)).

The Gospel of St Matthew and a compilation, [c. 1120]-[c. 1133], of copies of charters, saints' Lives and other records and literary material relating to the medieval diocese of Llandaf. The text of the earliest charters appears to date from c. 500, and additions have been made up to c. 1619, but the bulk of the historical, legal and hagiographical material was copied and compiled under the auspices of bishop Urban (consecrated in 1107), with the purpose of using the historical and legal record to provide his newly-styled diocese of Llandaf with antecedents that would assist his efforts to convince the papacy of the ancient primacy of the bishopric over its neighbours, Hereford and St Davids, and also to define its position in relation to the metropolitan claims of Canterbury.

Transcripts of treatises on Latin grammar (one of which is subscribed 'explicit donatus'); notes on figures of speech; Latin poems; an englyn; proverbs; and prayers, including an invocation to St David.

Llyfr Aneirin

A manuscript of the second half of the thirteenth century containing 'Y Gododdin', a series of awdlau lamenting warriors slain in battle at Catraeth, and believed to have been originally composed by Aneirin at the end of the sixth century (pp. 1-24). The awdlau are followed by four poems known as the gorchanau: Gorchan Tudfwlch (pp. 25-26), Gorchan Adebon (p. 26), Gorchan Cynfelyn (pp. 26-28) and Gorchan Maeldderw (pp. 28-38).
The manuscript was written by two scribes: scribe A (pp. 1.1-23.5, 25.1-30.11) and scribe B (pp. 23.6-24.21, 30.12-38.22). The hand of scribe B is also responsible for Peniarth MS 14, pp. 1-44 and Peniarth MS 17; see Ingo Mittendorf, 'Sprachliche und orthographische Besonderheiten eines mittelkymrischen Textes aus dem 13. A volume containing texts of (a) the fuller version of 'Ystoria Dared' (pp. 1-40), translated by Peter Roberts in The chronicle of the Kings of Britain, 1811, (b) the so-called 'Brut Tysilio' or 'compiled version' of Geoffrey of Monmouth's 'Historia Regum Britanniae' (pp. 41-198), also partly translated by Peter Roberts (op. cit.), and closely allied to the text of British Museum MS Cotton Cleopatra B.v., and (c) 'Brut y Saeson' to the year 1461 (pp. 199-308). Pp. 1-88 are in a late 14th century hand; the remaining pages are in the hand of Gutun Owain, the 15th century bard and herald associated with the abbey of Basingwerk. A note, dated 1630, by Robert Vaughan, Hengwrt refers to the misplacement of many pedigrees, and another note, dated 1809, by Peter Roberts refers to the identification of the volume by William Maurice, Cefn-y-braich.

A photostat facsimile of Hampton L. Carson MS. 19 in the Free Library of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pa., U.S.A., being an imperfect fifteenth century manuscript containing extracts from the Record of Caernarvon (extracts from, and summaries of the provisions of, the Statute of Rhuddlan, 1284, and subsequent statutes of Wales, and an abstract of common petitions, and replies thereto, exhibited at the council of the Prince [of Wales, at Kennington, 1305]), pleas before Hugh de Audely, Justice of North Wales, at Caernarvon, 1307/8, etc.

The Burial of Arthur, Æsop's fables, &c.,

A manuscript containing The Burial of Arthur (ff. 505-508), Æsop's Fables (ff. 509-521), the Lives of St David and St Beuno (ff. 522-525b, 528-541), the Purgatory of Patrick (ff. 542-557), etc.
There is a lacuna between ff. 507b and 508. The text of 'Buchedd Dewi' is the same as that printed in Llyvyr agkyr Llandewivrevi, pp. 106, l. 4 to 113, l. 28 and pp. 114, l. 28 to 118, l. 22. The text of 'Buchedd Beuno' is the same as that printed in Llyvyr Agkyr Llandewivrevi, p. 119, l. 23 to p. 127. One folio is missing near the beginning of the text of Breudwyd Pawl which differs from that in Llyvyr agkyr Llandewivrevi. The text of 'Purdan Padric' is practically the same as that printed by Canon Robert Williams (from Peniarth MS 5), but wanting p. 194, l. 31 to p. 196, l. 27, p. 201, l. 14 to p. 205, l. 3 and p. 209, l. 29 to p. 211. The writing resembles that of much of the Red Books of Hergest and Talgarth. The manuscript is a continuation of 'Didrefn Gasgliad' Vols I-III.

The Burial of Arthur, Travels of Odoricus, &c.,

A manuscript containing The Burial of Arthur (pp. 206-233), The Travels of Odoricus (pp. 234-277), The Seven Wise Men of Rome (pp. 278-319), The Gospel of Nicodemus (pp. 320-343), theological tracts, etc. (pp. 344-407). For The Seven Wise Men of Rome see also the Red Book of Hergest, col. 555.
The text of the Gospel of Nicodemus is very brief and seems to follow the 'Latin Gospel of Nicodemus' (see Tischendorf & Harris Cowper's editions of the Apocryphal Gospels). The text beginning at p. 350 breaks off in the middle of a commentary on the tenth commandment and the remainder of the text is lost. The Commandments are given in Latin and Welsh, and the commentary upon them is extensive. This manuscript is a continuation of 'Didrefn Gasgliad Vol. I'.

Three surviving folia of a lost manuscript in Middle English, written by a professional scribe during the first quarter of the fifteenth century, containing parts of the ‘Nun’s Priest’s Link' and 'Nun's Priest's Tale’ from Geoffrey Chaucer’s 'Canterbury Tales'. Textual contents: f. l recto, VII2784-2820 (B2, 3974-4010) and 'Here endeth the p(ro)loge and bygynneth the tale'; f. 1 verso, VII2822-2860 (B2, 4012-4050); f. 2 recto, VII3021-3058 (B2, 4211-4248); f. 2 verso, VII3060-3098 (B2, 4250-4288); f. 3 recto, VII3184-3222 (B2, 4374-4412); f. 3 verso, VII3223-3262 (B2, 4413-4452).
The folia were formerly tipped in at the back of a copy of Dr John Davies’s Antiquae Linguae Britannicae Dictionarium Duplex (1632). Linne R. Mooney has suggested that the Merthyr Fragment may be in the hand of Adam Pinkhurst; see Alexandra Gillespie and Daniel Wakelin (eds.), The Production of Books in England 1350-1500 (Cambridge, 2011), p. 199n.

The Red Book of Talgarth,

This manuscript is apparently in the same hand as large portions of the Red Book of Hergest and Peniarth MS 32. The contents, with few exceptions, are manifestly taken from Jesus College MS 2 and Peniarth MS 5. Pp. i-vi belong to the fifteenth century and contain pedigrees (p. i) which are somewhat difficult to decipher; triads (p. ii); and poetry by Dafydd ap Gwilym and Ieuan Dew Brydydd (p. iv-vi).
The twenty folios which are missing between ff. 20b and 21 now form part of Peniarth MS 12, pp. 77-116. A manuscript containing theological tracts (pp. 408-435), Yspryt Guido Ar Prior (pp. 436-471), Kerdwriaeth Kerd Davawd and Trioed Kerd (pp. 472-504).
The first folio is rubbed, stained and mostly illegible. The text of pp. 408-421, l.8 is practically identical with that published in Llyvyr Agkyr Llanwivrevi (Oxford, 1894), pp. 141-51, l. 3, but wanting the text on p. 144, l. 21 to p. 148, l. 26. The ending of Trioed Kerd is illegible. This manuscript is a continuation of 'Didrefn Gasgliad' Vols I & II.

A manuscript which includes theological passages (pp. 1-9); a treatise on Cerdd Dafod (pp. 10-16); Cyfrinach y Beirdd (pp. 33-68); Bonedd y Saint (pp. 69-79); pedigrees (pp. 80-84); Cynghorau Catwn Ddoeth (pp. 98-99); medical recipes (112); astronomy (pp. 123-124); Daniel's interpretation of dreams (pp. 126-133); the Book of Fate (pp. 186-212); the Lives of Saints Margaret (p. 145-167, 177-178, 183-184) and Catherine (pp. 167-176, 179-182); etc. The manuscript was written by Gutun Owain (fl. 1450-1498) (see p. 33) in two styles: pp. 33-101, l. 9 and p. 125, ll. 1-6 are in a formal book hand, and the remainder of the text is in cursive writing; however, a combination of both hands occurs on p. 142. The text on p. 94 is imperfect.
