Academic, cultural historian, author and former BBC programme editor and broadcaster David Burton (Dai) Smith was born in Rhondda. He was lecturer in History at what is now Cardiff University prior to being appointed Professor in the History of Wales at the same establishment, a post he held from 1985 until 1992 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dai_Smith_(academic)).
Paul Islwyn Thomas is one of the most experienced television executives working in the UK factual production sector and is currently (September 2023) CEO and owner of Wildflame Productions. The poet and writer William Henry Davies was born in the Pillgwenlly (Pill) district of Newport, Monmouthshire. He spent much of his life as a tramp or hobo in Britain and the United States, yet became one of the most popular poets of his time. His themes included observations on life's hardships and the ways the human condition is reflected in nature, together with his tramping adventures and the characters he met en route.
