Biographical history
The Nantcriba estate, or Wropton, situated in the parish of Forden near Welshpool, came into the possession of the Purcell or Pursell family of Dinthill. The estate included lands once owned by the dissolved abbey of Ystrad Marchell. The Purcell family became linked with the Vaughans of Llwydiarth and Llangedwyn in the seventeeth century through the marriage of John Purcell (d. 1667) and Elinor Vaughan. Their daughter, Mary Purcell, was married to Edward Vaughan of Llwydiarth in 1672. The connection with Wynnstay occurred through the marriage of their daughter, Anne Vaughan, to Sir Watkin Williams Wynn in 1715.
Archival history
Four original document wrappers indicate that the Nantcriba deeds and estate administration records had been retained as a unit by Wynnstay. The wrappers and a rental had already been removed at NLW prior to the current catalogue.
