Administrative history
Newport first came to the fore in politics as the scene of Chartist uprising in 1839. The current constituency of Newport West was created when the former Newport constituency was split into two divisions in 1983. The seat is delineated by the city boundary on the west and north sides, the River Usk on the east and the Bristol Channel on the south. It contains part of the town of Newport and suburbs on the west bank of the River Usk. The local council is in almost total Labour control, with a single Conservative forming the opposition.
