Biographical history

Lady Olwen Carey-Evans (1892-1990) was the third child of the statesman David Lloyd George, 1st Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor (1863-1945), and his wife Dame Margaret Lloyd George (née Owen, 1866-1941). The least prominent member of the family, Lady Olwen Carey-Evans collected many papers relating to her parents, her sister Lady Megan Lloyd-George (1902-66), and her husband, Sir Thomas Carey-Evans (1884-1947). She married her husband from 10 Downing Street in 1917. Her children included Robin, Eluned and Margaret. Lady Olwen remained true to the Liberal Party throughout her long life.

Archival history

The papers were retained by the children of Lady Olwen Carey-Evans for two years after her death, and were then sold to the National Library, at which point the correspondence between David and Margaret Lloyd George, much of the rest of the Lloyd George family correspondence, and the David Lloyd George speeches were separated from the archive to become NLW MSS 22823-8C.

Immediate source of acquisition or transfer

Purchased from Robin Carey-Evans, New South Wales, Australia, Miss Eluned Macmillan, Toronto, Canada, and Mrs Margaret Barrett, Haddington, East Lothian, children of Lady Olwen Carey-Evans, in 1992.
