Biographical history
Thomas Levi (1825-1916), Calvinistic Methodist minister, editor and author, was born in Penrhos, near Ystradgynlais. He began preaching around 1846, ministering at Ystradgynlais, Morriston and Aberystwyth, and continuing in this work until 1910. In 1853 he embarked on a fruitful literary career, publishing thirty original works and translating a total of sixty English books into Welsh. His primary literary achievement was the founding, in 1862, of the children's periodical Trysorfa y Plant, which appeared each month for the next fifty years, Levi himself serving as editor until 1911. His son, Thomas Arthur Levi (1874-1954), was Professor of English Law at University College of Wales, Aberystwyth.
