Administrative history

The Department of International Politics at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth (later University of Wales Aberystwyth), was established in 1919, when David Davies, MP (later Lord Davies of Llandinam), endowed a trust fund to create the first department of International Politics in the world, hoping to foster a greater understanding of world events and thereby promote peace and security. In 1968, the Department led a review of local government in Wales, under the title 'The Welsh Council', reporting in 1972. The Department undertook the Welsh Election Study, 1979, as a research project for the Economic and Social Research Council (HR 4732/1) to examine voter behaviour in Wales and to survey attitudes to party politics and other issues. The interviews were conducted by Social Surveys (Gallup Poll) Limited.
