Note

Valerie (Val) Feld was born in Caernarfon in 1947. Early in her career she worked as a journalist in London and as a social worker in Chorley, Lancashire, where she also served as Labour councillor. Following the break-up of her marriage to John Feld, with whom she had two children, she moved back to Wales and became the first director of the homeless charity Shelter Cymru. In 1989 she was appointed head of the Equal Opportunities Commission for Wales and ten years later was elected Assembly Member for Swansea East. She continued to serve as Chair of the Welsh Assembly's Economic Development Committee until two months prior to her death from cancer in July 2001.
