Archival history

'Wm. Wotton' (on title-page), 'Donum Viri Illustrissimi Jacobi Vernon Armiger Reginae Magnae Britanniae apud Regem Daniae Oratoris, G. Wottono' (front pastedown). This volume, annotated by Wotton, was lent by Chamberlayne to William Nicolson on 25 November 1704, see Clyve Jones and Geoffrey Holmes (eds.), The London Diaries of William Nicolson Bishop of Carlisle 1702-1718 (Oxford, 1985), 236. It was probably returned to Wotton, who may have sold the copy to Moses Williams, with whom he collaborated on Cyfreithjeu Hywel Dda ac eraill, seu leges Wallicae (Londini, 1730) [ESTC T63960]. On his death in 1727, Williams's books passed to the mathematician William Jones, whose library was left to the Earl of Macclesfield of Shirburn Castle, Oxfordshire. Another volume once belonging to Wotton, The Gospels of the Fower Evangelistes translated in the Old Saxons tyme out of Latin into the vulgare toung of the Saxons (London, 1571) was also at Shirburn (sold at Sotheby's, 11 April 2006, lot 2319). Shirburn Castle embossed stamp on title-page, and North Library bookplate of 1860 and press mark '112.f.12' inside rear cover. Erased shelfmark 'MI.10', and shelfmarks 'Y1.2' and 'N.6.41' on front pastedown. Initially sold at Sotheby's (in the twelfth Shirburn Castle sale), 2 October 2008, lot 4513.

Content and structure area

Scope and content

A printed copy of Gudmundur Andrésson, Lexicon Islandicum sive Gothicae runae vel linguae septentrionalis dictionarium ... (Copenhagen: Christian Wering for Christian Gerhard, 1683) [BL STC Scandinavian G385]. The volume was presented, [1702x1704], by James Vernon the younger (1677-1756), (British envoy to Denmark from 1702 to 1707), to the linguist William Wotton (see Wotton's inscription on front pastedown). Wotton subsequently annotated the volume with copious notes comparing Icelandic to English and Anglo-Saxon, whilst working on his groundbreaking research on an Indo-European proto-language. That work was poorly published in Latin as 'Dissertatio de confusione linguarum Babylonica', in John Chamberlayne's Oratio dominica (Amsterdam, 1715), without the author's knowledge. An English version was published posthumously as A discourse concerning the confusion of languages at Babel (London, 1730) [ESTC T83574].
