Scope and content
This volume was initially used as a woodcutters' account, 1748-49, giving the names of woods, the names of the woodcutters employed at each, the cords cut by each man, and the amount paid. The woods cut include woods in Miskin, Cwm Cynon, Ystradyfodwg, Llanwynno, Gwaelod-y-waun, Bedwellte, Llanfihangel, Gelli-gaer, Gelliwastad, Llanedern, Maes-teg, Rhydri, Llanisien, Merthyr, Henllys, Llantrisant, Llanfabon, and Risca, and belong to William Basset, esq., William Morgan, esq., Thomas Morgan, esq., Henry Morgan, esq., Roger Powell, esq., Gabriel Lewis, esq., Lord Plymouth, and Thomas Lewis, esq., among others. Many of the accounts are settled with an acknowledgement of having received the balance, often as charcoal, often signe by a collier. -- The other end of the volume was subsequently (c.1779) used for abstracts of leases in Machen, 1690-1778, Bedwas, 1722-79, Mynyddislwyn, 1724-78, Bedwellte, 1697-1776, Gelli-gaer and Merthyr, 1770, Eglwysilan, 1765-75, Marshfield, 1710-76, St Mellons, 1773-76, Coedcernyw, 1772, Llanfihangel-y-fedw, 1773-76, St Brides, 1776, St Brides and Peterstone, 1773, and Rumney, 1771.
