[ ], 19 Easterly Crescent, Leeds 8. Would like to congratulate Huw T. Edwards on the 'blunt forthrightness' with which he made his statement on home rule on the television. Although it is daily becoming more apparent that honest and democratic argument will bring nothing to Wales in this connection, it is a courageous act for Huw T. Edwards to speak out. Abysmal ignorance prevails in England on the subject; the English have an absolute monopoly of the House of Commons and are in a position to out-vote the Welsh, the Scots and the Irish if need be. There is a critical need for Welsh opinions to be formed and guided on these matters. The weakness of the press all too often poisons Welsh opinions. A truly national daily newspaper - in ownership and distribution - would be a great asset to Wales. At the moment Wales has to rely on her prominent public figures, and often they prove defective. Only the efforts of the Welsh people can bring real prosperity to Wales in the future. The most auspicious beginning for Wales is 'independence and a proper control of our own resources and destiny'. Hopes that the Tryweryn Conference will prove a success. Much depends on the ability of its Chairman and the contribution of the individual speakers.
