Allt-lwyd was the residence of the Hughes family, descended from William Hughes of Rhos Tyddyn, Devil's Bridge, Cardiganshire. William's son, William, was vicar of Llanilar and married Dorothy, daughter of Thomas Evans of Ty Mawr, Talsarn. Their son, John Hughes (1768-1821) of Glanrafon married Jane Edwards, the widow of Thomas Evans of Llanilar. Their heir, John Hughes (1805-1852), was the first member of the family to reside at Allt-lwyd. According to the landowners return of 1873, John's eldest son, John George Parry Hughes (1837-1906) owned 1,317 acres with an annual rental of £1,238. John George Parry Hughes married Elizabeth Charlotte Mary, eldest daughter of Col. J.A. Lloyd-Philipps the owner of the adjacent Mabws estate, and of Dale Castle in Pembrokeshire.
