Scope and content

A notebook entitled 'Catholic Memorial Inscriptions from Vol. XII of the Catholic Record Society's Publications, contributed by John Hobson Matthews. 1913', described as having been "transcribed verbatim into this book by Mary Canning, August 1921." The introduction by J. H. Matthews gives his reasons for recording memorial inscriptions, and explains in some detail the distinguishing features of Catholic sepulchral monuments. The article consists of transcriptions of monumental inscriptions, principally from parishes in the Monnow valley, NE Monmouthshire and SW Herefordshire, but with a few further examples from Gloucestershire and other parts of England. The locations and physical appearance of many of the tombs are described and points of historical interest are noted. The parishes listed below are in Monmouthshire unless otherwise stated: p. 8 Monmouth; p. 11 Rockfield; p. 14 Welsh Newton (Herefordshire), with a description of the tomb of the Venerable John Kemble, a priest, who was executed at Hereford for his beliefs; p. 19 Mitchel Troy; p. 20 Dixton; p. 21 Llangattock Vibon Avel; p. 23 St Maughan's; p. 25 Llantilio Crossenny; p. 30 Llanfair Cilgoed, including a brief history of the chapel; p. 32 Skenfrith; p. 33 Dingestow; p. 36 Pen-y-clawdd; p. 37 Cwmcarfan; p. 37 Usk, with a description of the supposed grave of the Venerable David Lewis, SJ, alias Charles Baker, "executed at Usk in 1679, for alleged complicity in the bogus 'Popish plot'"; p. 44 Llandenny; p. 45 Llangofen; p. 46 Llangyfiw; p. 46 Penallt; p. 47 St Arvans; p. 47 Chapel Hill; p. 47 Chepstow; p. 49 Tredynog; p. 50 Llan-arth; p. 58 Bryngwyn; p. 59 Llanover; p. 60 Abergavenny; p. 66 Newport; p. 72 Ross (Herefordshire); p. 72 Llangaran (Herefordshire); p. 74 Garway (Herefordshire); p. 74 Goodrich (Herefordshire); p. 77 Llanrothal (Herefordshire); p. 77 St Weonard's (Herefordshire); p. 77 Peterstow (Herefordshire); p. 78 Welsh Bicknor (Herefordshire); p. 81 Staunton-by-Coleford (Gloucestershire); p. 82 Newland (Gloucestershire); p. 84 Ruardean (Gloucestershire); p. 85 Porchester (Hampshire); p. 86 Portsmouth (Hampshire); p. 87 Portsea (Hampshire); p. 89 Lincoln (Lincolnshire); p. 90 Hazelwood (Yorkshire); p. 91 Hammersmith (Middlesex); p. 95 Lee (S.E. Kent). A short list at the end (p. 96) refers to sources of information concerning the parishes of: Cardiff, (St John's), Llandaff and Penarth (co. Glam.), Sarnesfield (Herefordshire) and Brecon Priory Church. Throughout the text, figures in red ink denote page numbers from volume XII of the Catholic Record Society's series of publications. An index of surnames and place-names at the back of this notebook also refers to the page numbers of the published volume.
