Un o amcanion gwreiddiol yr Academi oedd paratoi cyfle i'w haelodau gyfarfod i drafod materion llenyddol am fwy na diwrnod, o leiaf unwaith y flwyddyn. Yn ystod y blynyddoedd cynnar, unig gyfarfodydd yr Academi oedd y penwythnosau hyn a gynhaliwyd ddwywaith y flwyddyn. Wrth iddi dyfu fe sefydlwyd rhai isbwyllgorau ad hoc, ac fe gynhaliwyd ambell i gyfarfod busnes y tu allan i'r cynadleddau penwythnos, yn ystod wythnos yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol, yn bennaf. Erbyn 1974 roedd gan yr Academi Swyddog Gweinyddol rhan amser.
