Administrative history
The Golden Valley Railway Company, initially operating a line from Pontrilas, Herefordshire, along the Golden Valley of the River Dore to Dorstone, Herefordshire, opening in 1881, extended its railroad from Dorstone, to Hay-on-Wye, Brecknockshire, in 1885, and it was not until 1889 that work was completed. Following limited success, the line was closed down in 1898, and sold to the Great Western Railway. The GWR undertook extensive upgrading of the line, and reopened it in 1901. The branch line ran passenger services until 1947 and ceased to carry freight in 1957.
