Letter book of Dewi Dawel,

Letter book, [1841]-1891, of David Evans (Dewi Dawel), also used by him as a minute book for the Glynsanan Benefit Society, Llanfynydd.
The volume contains accounts, minutes and resolutions, [1841]-1870, of the Glynsanan Benefit Society (ff. 1-17, 134 verso, 137-139, 154 verso); summaries, copies and drafts, 1871-1891, of letters sent by David Evans, relating to family matters and his work as a tailor, publican and rate-collector, as well as a few letters by his son, Thomas Morgan Evans (ff. 23-136 verso, 137 verso-147, 148-149); miscellaneous memoranda and accounts, 1869-1886 (ff. 17-22); parts of an essay on the history of Talyllychau, [1890] (ff. 147 verso-148, 150 verso-152; see also NLW MS 9510E); various verses in Welsh, 1890-[1891] (ff. 147, 149 verso-150, 152 verso-154); and a memorandum relating to a ploughing match in Cwm-du, 1878 (ff. 5, 6). Part of a draft letter of condolence, [1876], to the family of the late John Johnes, Dolaucothi, is loose between ff. 17-18.

Mae'r cerddi yn cynnwys fersiwn ddrafft a chynllun o'r bryddest 'Dr William Morgan' (ff. 2-15) a fu'n fuddugol yn Eisteddfod Betws y Coed, Nadolig 1859, a 'Gogangerdd i Ddirmygwyr Cyfarfodydd Llenyddol', 1868 (ff. 17, 19), y ddwy wedi eu cyhoeddi yn Y Murmuron (Llanrwst, 1868), ynghyd â nifer o englynion a phenillion eraill (f. 17 verso-18 verso, 19 recto-verso, 21 verso). Mae yna hefyd nodiadau amrywiol ar William Morgan, Robert Ferrar a'r Diwygiad Protestannaidd (ff. 19 verso-21). Mae yna ychydig gyfrifon amrywiol, 1819, mewn llaw arall (f. 1 a thu mewn i'r cloriau). = The poems include a draft version and a plan of a pryddest to Dr William Morgan (ff. 2-15) which won a prize at Betws y Coed Eisteddfod, Christmas 1859, and a satire, 'Gogangerdd i Ddirmygwyr Cyfarfodydd Llenyddol', 1868 (ff. 17, 19), both published in Y Murmuron (Llanrwst, 1868), along with englynion and other verses (some illegible) (f. 17 verso-18 verso, 19 recto-verso, 21 verso). There are also miscellaneous notes on William Morgan, Robert Ferrar and the Protestant Reformation (ff. 19 verso-21). A few miscellaneous accounts, 1819, are in a different hand (f. 1 and inside the covers).

R. Morris, Liverpool, together with an awdl, probably by the same author, entitled 'Y Nos'; and a Welsh translation, [?1940s], by T. Ifor Rees of Edward Fitzgerald's The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyámm, with a covering letter, 1948, from Rees in Bolivia.
