A volume containing minutes of the meetings of aldermen of the borough of Swansea recommending four fit persons in election to serve the office of portreeve, and minutes of the election by a majority of the burgesses of portreeve, common attornies, and sergeants at mace. Up to 1788 the minutes were largely written and all certified by Gabriel Powell, recorder. Thereafter most of the minutes are certified by Thomas Morgan as steward. At the other end of the book are the following forms of Oath:- Oath of Allegiance, Oath of Supremacy, the Portreeve's Oath, The Burgesses' Oath, The Alderman's Oath, The Oath of a Constable, Affirmation of a Quaker, The Burgesses' Oath, The Alderman's Oath, and Abjuration Oath; and the form of proclamation of a fair, at the Market House, and on the Postern. Draft complaint of Henry, earl of Worcester against Henry Baker, farmer, who had obtained a lease for 10 years from Lord Bergavenny of all the perquisites [of the lordship of Abergavenny] for a fine of £45 and a yearly rent of 40s. Baker claimed a relief of £5 from the Earl for the manor of Clitha 'collecting it on a Survey book of 28 Elizabeth, distrained upon a tenant of the Earl for the manor of Mayndiff for a relief of 25s., distrained upon the manor of Maindiff for a knight's fee of £5, and procured leases on the demesne lands of Llanwenarth and the castle of Abergavenny to his own use, etc.'.
