Personal papers

The file comprises family and personal papers, including letters of recommendation on behalf of Duncan Campbell Lloyd Fitzwilliams, a medical student and the fifth son of Charles H. L. Fitzwilliams, desirous of serving as a field surgeon in South Africa, 1900; a letter to Captain E. C. Fitzwilliams at Johannesburg relating to a kaross [a South African mantle or sleeveless jacket made of the skins of animals with the hair on], 1901; an ode (Welsh) written by G. Jones to Captain E. C. Lloyd Fitzwilliams of Cilgwyn on his return 'from the seat of war', 1902; typescript copies of two letters in the form of diaries from Duncan C. L. Fitzwilliams, a Red Cross surgeon in Romania, to his wife, 19 Nov.-6 Dec. 1916; and genealogical papers.

Gelligadrog estate,

Deeds and related papers relating to the Gelligadrog estate, 1866-1926 and 1954, comprising (in 1872) Gelligadrog (160a.), Caegwyllt (48a.) and Gwndwnmawr (59a.), all in p. Llangyndeyrn, co. Carm. In 1914 the estate comprised Gelligadrog, Glastonbury, Caegwyllt, Gwndwnmawr, Caelawrence or Sandfield, and Drysgyrch Factory, all in p. Llangyndeyn. In 1926 Colonel Edward Crawford Lloyd Fitzwilliams contracted to buy Gelligadrog (116a.) and Drysgyrch Factory (11a.). -- The deeds include conveyances, mortgages, declarations, and covenants for the production of deeds, 1866-1926, including the conveyance in 1923 of Laswern (32a.), then part of Gelligadrog. The conveyance and the mortgage of 1872 both include a plan of Gelligadrog, Caegwyllt and Gwndwnmawr, the 1872 covenant for the production of deeds lists deeds dated 1790-1871, and the schedule to the 1873 mortgage names the individual fields on the three farms. The 1914 covenant for the production of deeds includes a schedule of deeds of Gelligadrog, 1866-1898, Glastonbury, 1818-1881, Parkhall estate in the borough of Carmarthen, 1786-1880, and Gellywen in the parish of St Clears, 1870-1904. Also includes a wayleave agreement with the South Wales Electricity Board for low-voltage lines at Bryndioddef-isaf and Pen-walk, 1954. -- The papers include abstracts of title, requisitions on title (one enclosing three death certificates), schedules of deeds, letters and land searches, 1871-1926.

Electricity wayleave

The file comprises papers relating to a wayleave for the Llanelly & District Electric Supply Co. Ltd to carry their Llanelli-Carmarthen overhead line through the Cilgwyn estate in the parish of Llangyndeyrn.

Llandyfrïog churchyard

The file comprises two booklets, being the account of Evan Evans of Paradise Cottage, Pentrecagal, for work in Llandyfrïog churchyard, May 1926-May 1928 and Nov. 1928-May 1931.

Schedules and valuations

The file comprises an early 20th cent. typewritten schedule of reversions of leasehold properties on the Cilgwyn estate; memoranda on vacant houses inspected with Mrs Edward Fitzwilliams, 1918; a list of furniture and household effects at Cilgwyn, the property of the late C. H. L. Fitzwilliams; and a valuation of the estate on the death of Colonel E. C. L. Fitzwilliams, 1938.

Timber sales

The file comprises papers and deeds relating to the sale of timber and firewood from the estate's woodlands, including letters, agreements, posters, plans and accounts.

Tax papers

The file comprises papers relating to taxes, including reversion duty accounts and claims for site value deductions under the Finance (1909-1910) Act 1910.

Petty cash books

The file comprises three petty cash books, Jan. 1913-Aug. 1923, Sept. 1923-Nov. 1929, and Dec. 1929-Dec. 1933, when the account is signed off by ECLF.

Receipts

The file comprises invoices and receipts, mainly from local tradesmen and the West Cambrian Power Co. Ltd.

The papers include a copy of the Agricultural Holdings (England) Act, 1883, and the annual statement and report of the British Van Limestone Quarries Ltd, 1926.

Purchases and sales of property

The file comprises deeds and papers relating to the purchase and sale of property by the estate. The papers include deeds and documents relating to Cillech (77a.) in the parish of Llandyfrïog, 1865-1926, when it was bought by E. C. Ll. Fitzwilliams; agreements for Danherber in the parish of Cenarth, bought in 1892 and sold in 1926; a copy will of the Rev. Thomas Gronow of London, 1870; a sale catalogue for the Gelligadrog estate in the parish of Llangyndeyrn, sold by public auction, 1871; a sale catalogue of properties in the parish of Llangyndeyrn, including Ffoswilkin (36a.) and Tirmwg (4a.), 1917; and papers relating to a sale of Cilgwyn estate properties in Llangeler, 1932. -- There is also a conveyance between Richard Owen of Scarborough, Yorkshire, esq., and Richard Stephenson of Tue Brook, near Liverpool, Lancashire, butcher, of a dwelling-house and shop in West Darby Road, Tue Brook, 1879. The connection between this deed and the Cilgwyn estate is not apparent.
