A volume containing two collections of transcripts of poetry, with copious annotations, in the hand of Owen Williams ('Owain Gwyrfai'), Waunfawr. The first collection, entitled 'Llwyn y Gell', includes 'cywyddau', etc. by Gruff. The sources used by the scribe for his transcripts of poems include 'L[l]yfr ysgrif Eiddo Mr. Owen Roberts gynt o Bentraeth Mon', 'L[l]yfrau Owen Gruffydd Llanystumdwy', and '[L]lyfrau M.S. pwdredig eiddo Mr. Jonathan Jones, Colector of Carnarfon 1855'. At the beginning is a list of poets whose titles were taken from Y Greal and a list of titles of poems transcribed in full. The collection was compiled during the period 1855-9, although the fly-leaf bears the scribe's name dated 1863. The second collection, beginning at the end, is entitled 'Y Gell Gynen, ('herwydd canau cynen sydd ynddo') and contains fliting poems ('ymrysongerddi') between Edmwnt Prys and William Cynwal and Sion Philip and Edmunt Prys, together with additional 'cywyddau' by Edmunt Prys. This section of the manuscript was compiled between 1844 and 1846, but there are some additions of the period 1859-61. Recorded on the upper end paper are timber purchase accounts of Owen Williams, 1844-5. The manuscript is lettered on the spine 'Owain Gwyrfai MS'.

A manuscript in the hand of Samuel Williams (c. 1660 - c. 1722), vicar of Llandyfriog, Cardiganshire, containing forty-four sermons translated from or based on several authors e.g. [Simon] Patrick [successively bishop of Chichester and of Ely], [Nicholas] Brady [the elder], [Thomas] Adams, [Friedrich] Spanheim, [George] Smalridge [bishop of Bristol], [Theophilus] Dorrington, Cl[ement] Ellis, [Robert] Bragge [dissenting minister], etc. There is a list of contents at the beginning of the volume, and hymns ('Myfi yw'r Adgyfodiad mawr...', etc.) and metrical psalms by [Edmwnd Prys and] William Middleton have been written on the fly-leaves and in blank spaces at the end of some of the sermons. There are some additions, among them the Lord's Prayer, in the hand of the scribe's son, Moses Williams (1685-1742), vicar of Defynnog. Entries on the back of one of the original covers, also in the hand of Moses Williams, indicate that some of the sermons were preached at Dyvynog [Defynnog] and Cap[el] Ill[t]ud during the years 1728-30.

A notebook in the autograph of R. Prys Morris ('Robyn Frych') [Dolgellau] containing copies of two 'cywyddau' by Edmwnd Prys ('Cywydd Priodas' beginning 'Rhai a gar yn rhagorawl', 1623, and 'Cywydd Marwnad Sion Phylip Bardd ac Athro' beginning 'Rhodd Dduw gwyn yw rhwydd ganu', 1620), and a note by R. Prys Morris referring to the death of his mother, Elinor Morris, 12 September 1875.

A small composite volume (124 pp.) containing brief chronicles written by Robert Vaughan of Hengwrt with some annotations by Lewis Morris and a few additional items written towards the end of the eighteenth century. The contents are as follows: p. 1, a note concerning 'Ystradmeurig' and Edward Richards [sic] (cf. Panton MS 24, pp. 134-5); pp. 9-24, 'Allan o hen llyvrae memrwn wedi eu scrivennu ers gwell no 300 mlynedh y cawd y cofion hynn : Oes Gorthyyrn Gorthenev hyt weyth Vadon ydymladaud Arthur ar Saesson ... or pan doeth Normyn gyntaf (y ynys Brydyn [yny aeth Gruffut ygwystel, dwy flyned ar bymthec a deugain a chant hyt vrwydr Derwyn, chwe blyned a chue chant]', followed by a note in the hand of L[ewis] M[orris], 'This vastly differs from that printed with H. H: of a warrant, 5 January 1636/7, to Evan Thomas of the parish of Talyllyn, Merionethshire for the levying of ship money in the said parish of Talyllyn in the hundred of Estimaner, Merionethshire ('N:b: I have the Original of this warrant now in my Possession. E:h:'). In connection with the Reverend Evan Herbert, see Panton MS 24, p. 135; he was rector of Llanfairfechan, Caernarvonshire from 1801 until his death in 1830. The chronicles are to be found in Panton MS 23, pp. 155-229, and Panton MS 38, pp.137-145, but whether the Panton manuscripts contain a direct transcript from the present manuscript is uncertain. There are some pencil notes in the autograph of St George Armstrong Williams. The number '22' occurs on a label on the cover, with '384' written in pencil above.

A small volume entitled 'Cell-gasgl Sion Lleyn, 1805', containing 'englynion' (chiefly epitaphs), stanzas in free metre including hymn stanzas, and one or two longer poems (e.g. 'Awdl ar Dosturi 1809' and 'Pillion i Dwm or Nant herwydd ei Lyfr, sef Ban y Byd - Creglais o Groglofft &c, 1809, Ebrill 27') by and in the autograph of John Roberts ('Sion Lleyn'). Other poets represented are Griffth Williams('Guttun Peris'), W. Elias and O[wen] Griffith. There is also a list of unfamiliar Welsh words ('Geiriau Cymraeg dieithrol yn amlwg'), with the following note: 'Hyn a gymerwyd o gasgliadau Thos Prys Esqur, Plas Iolun, a D. Ddu a S. Lleyn'. On p. 58 is the note 'Mai 11. 1812 Priodais' [see Cwrtmawr MS 510, p. 106].

A composite volume containing lists of Welsh words and their meanings, some in the autograph of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), others from printed sources; notes in the autograph of R. Prys Morris, including references to a number of 'cywyddau', etc. by Edmwnd Prys in BM Add MSS and a few extracts from [Joseph] Besse, A collection of the sufferings of the people called Quakers (London, 1753); part of a letter from the Reverend Evan Evans [? Llansadwrn Rectory, Anglesey] to 'Myrddin Fardd'; and transcripts in the autograph of 'Myrddin Fardd' and others of poetry by Rowland Jones, Richard Hughes, Cefn Llanfair, Cadwaladr Cesail, Thomas Williams ('Twm Pedrog'), Morys Dwyfech, Huw Arwystl, [ ] 'Gutto o Leyn' (d. 1867) (beginning wanting) and [Evan Pritchard] 'Ieuan Lleyn', some printed in J. A scrap-book compiled, with a holograph introduction and table of authors, by David Evans, Llanrwst containing press cuttings, largely from Llais y Wlad, 1875-?81, of 'cywyddau' and 'awdlau', with annotations. The poetry consists mainly of the flyting 'cywyddau' of Edmwnd Prys and William Cynwal ('Yr Ymrysonfeydd rhwng Edmwnd Prys, Archddiacon Meirionydd, a William Cynwal, Prydydd ac Arwyddfardd') and 'cywyddau' ('Cyfansoddiadau') by Dafydd Llwyd ab Llywelyn ab Gruffydd Fychan. T. R. Roberts ('Asaph'), Edmwnd Prys, Archddiacon Meirionydd: Traethawd Bywgraffyddol a Beirniadol (Caernarfon, 1899), with a few additions, largely in the form of 'cywyddau', in the hand of J. H. Davies.

A manuscript containing flyting poetry exchanged between Archdeacon Edmwnd Prys and Wiliam Cynwal. Following the death of Wiliam Cynwal, Edmwnd Prys breaks off the exchange and composes an elegy to his erstwhile poetic rival (p. 177). Another elegy by Edmwnd Prys, to Siôn Phylip, occurs on p. 187. Richard Morris indexed the manuscript for W. Jones, Armiger, R.S.S., London, 1747 (see pp. iii-v). At p. 124 there is a copy of a letter from Edmwnd Prys to Wiliam Cynwal which refers to nine cywyddau of Wiliam Cynwal, of which a note on p. 93 of Peniarth MS 125 informs us the ninth was lost.
The extensive explanatory marginalia accompanying the compositions of Edmwnd Prys, coupled with the fact that the elegy to Siôn Phylip was evidently once folded and carried in the pocket, suggests that this manuscript may be a holograph once belonging to Edmwnd Prys. Much of the text of this manuscript, or one of the same archetype, was transcribed into Peniarth MS 125, though Peniarth MS 49 has four additional lines following 'Dôd i ddôl dedwdd Wiliam ...'.

A collection of carols on biblical and religious themes by Thomas Iefan, Dd. ap Gruffudd o Drewyn, Edmwnt Prys, Siôn Morys, 'Un o Lunden', and others un-named; 'dyrïe karwssio'; 'englynion i wragedd'; various 'englynion'; 'Owdwl y gath' by Robert Klidro; 'Araith Wgan'; 'Ymddiddan rhwng yr wttreswr a'r dylluan' by 'Thomas y darlleniwr'; 'cywyddau' by Edward ap Raff, 'O.G.', and others un-named; and a draft letter from his children to Ieuan ap Thomas Lloyd containing a reference 'to the new found land wch is called Ferginiae'.

A volume of transcripts of Welsh poetry. The first fifty-one folios contain copies, in a 16th-century hand, of 'cywyddau' by Siôn Cent, Iolo Goch, Dafydd ap Gwilym, Madog Benfras, Gruffudd Gryg, Dafyddd ab Edmwnd, Iorwerth Fynglwyd, Tudur Aled, Dafydd Nanmor and others. The remainder of the volume (ff. 52-147) is in several hands of the end of the 17th century. At the head of f. 52 is the following note:- 'Haec sequens Collectio facta fuit Opera P.V.A.M. ...', the initials probably representing the name of Peter Vaughan, M.A., who was vicar of Llangernyw from 1682 to 1689. This part of the manuscript contains the names and arms of the fifteen tribes of Gwynedd; pedigrees of some Abergele families (among them that of Peter Vaughan himself) taken from the books of Sion Tudur and Rhys Cain; an account of the five residences of Sir Roger Mostyn in 1682; poetry in strict and free metres by Sion Tudur, Morus Dwyfech, Richard Phylip, Gryffydd Phylip, Guto'r Glyn, Maredudd ap Rhys, Edmwnd Prys, Lewis Glyn Cothi and others; etc.

Holograph letters from [the Rev.] Walter Davies (Gwallter Mechain) to Daniel Jones, Wrexham, 182[ ]-1825 (2) (points relating to the publishing of the writer's two-volume edition [?of the poetical works of Huw Morus, viz. Eos Ceiriog, sef Casgliad o Ber Ganiadau Huw Morus . . . (Yn Ngwrecsam, 1823)], the writer's doubts as to the wisdom of publishing an unrevised edition of the metrical psalms of Edmwnd Prys, a suggestion that opinions on this point be sought through the columns of Y Gwyliedydd, criticisms that some of Prys's lines were stiff ('anystwyth hynod') and did not lend themselves to any measure, references to Titus Lewis's edition of Prys's psalms [Pigion o Salmau Canu yn ôl cyfansoddiad Edmwnd Prys (Caerfyrddin, 1810)], the belief that Lewis had introduced some changes into some of the psalms), and [John] Painter [printer, Wrexham], 1821-1825 (2) (points relating to the publishing of vol. II of [Huw] Morus's work, comments on the proposal to publish Edmund Prys's psalms (in the same vein as in the letter to Daniel Jones), the sale of copies of the edition of Huw Morus's work).

[i.e. Panton MS 68 now NLW MS 2034]; 175-88, an alphabetical list of Welsh bards 'o Lyfr D'dd Ddu o'r Eryri'; and 188-98, miscellanea including transcripts of 'englynion' attributed to Siôn Mawddwy, Ieuan Tew, William Philip, and D[afydd] ab Gwilym, miscellaneous triads, genealogical data relating to various Welsh bards and Syr Rhys ap Thomas, etc. Pp. 207-390 (previously paginated 1-184) contain a collection of maxims, proverbs, triads, sayings, etc., attributed to Cattwg Ddoeth and described on a 'title-page' to the section ( p. 199) as 'Llyma Ddoethineb Cattwg Ddoeth o Lancarvan' and in a concluding note (p. 390) as 'Llyfr y cyntaf y Gwyddfardd Cyfarwydd'. In a note on the aforementioned 'title-page' (p. 199) Edward Williams claims to have transcribed this collection in 1799 from a manuscript in the possession of Siams Thomas of Maerdy Newydd, co. Glamorgan. Preceding and following the actual text of the collection are transcripts of a prefatory letter dated 1685 (pp. 201-06) and of the concluding note already referred to (p. 390) both of which are attributed to the Glamorgan scribe and copyist Thomas ab Iefan of Tre Bryn as compiler of the manuscript from which Edward Williams was allegedly copying (see TLLM, t. 172; IM, tt. 291-4). Pp. 391-477 contain a transcript of a collection, in alphabetical order, of over three thousand Welsh proverbs attributed to Cattwg Ddoeth ('Llyma Ddiarhebion Cattwg Ddoeth . . . sef yw hwnn Ail Lyfr y Gwyddfardd Cyvarwydd'). This collection, according to the aforementioned note at the end of the preceding section (p. 390) attributed to Thomas ab Iefan, had been compiled by the said Thomas from various sources and formed a continuation of the previous section. Edward Williams's claim with regard to the Siams Thomas volume is probably intended to apply to the contents of pp. 391-477 as well. The contents of pp. 199-390 have been published in The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales . . ., vol. III (London, 1807), pp. 1-99.

Miscellaneous papers in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') bound together in one volume. P. 19 is inscribed 'Historical Anecdotes of Dunraven Castle in the County of Glamorgan . . . Compiled from Authentic Historical MSS. in the Welsh Language by Edward Williams . . . 1814', and is followed by pp. 27-54, a pseudo - historical account of the princes or kings of Siluria and Glamorgan from the time of Bran fab Llyr to the time of Owain, son of Hywel Dda, these princes or rulers being linked with Dunraven; pp. 59-76, similar notes bringing the story down to the time of Gwrgan, possibly the great-great-grandson of Hywel Dda; and pp. 106-15, genealogical notes relating to the Wyndham family of Dunraven (see also N.LW MS 13114B above). Other items include pp. 133-81, extracts of varying length, some very copious, from the 'cywyddau' of Edmund Prys and Wiliam Cynwal presumably mainly to exemplify certain words and phrases; pp. 182- 203, 229-49, further extracts of varying length from the works of various Welsh bards again mainly to illustrate or provide examples of certain words and names, e.g. Hu, Huon, Hu Gadarn, Gal, Gwal, etc., and a copy of an 'awdl' attributed to Siôn Brwynog; pp. 211-14, incomplete notes headed 'Anecdotes of the making of Iron in Glamorgan'; pp. 263-74, 287-93, a tract entitled 'Preface to Paul's Triades'; pp. 299-327, a series of one hundred and seventy Welsh triads entitled 'Trioedd Pawl' (for text and English version see J. Williams ab Ithel (ed.): Barddas . . ., vol. I (Llandovery, 1862), pp. 290-323); pp. 339-49, notes headed 'Llyma Ddosparth ar y Saith Gelfyddyd'; etc. In two instances notes have been written on the blank verso or margins of a printed sheet advertising a 'Grand Musical Repository' in Castle Street, Bristol, and a printed sheet containing proposals for publishing Edward Williams's two volumes of English verse Poems Lyric and Pastoral in 1792.
