A notebook containing a scheme for a literary meeting; a notice of a competition at the Rhostryfan Literary Society annual meeting, 1855; poetry; and a paper entitled 'Y Sabbath odditan yr Oruchwyliaeth Fosenaidd'.

Cyfeiriadau Ysgrythurol,

An early nineteenth century volume containing tabulated Biblical references arranged under such subjects as 'Ynghylch yr Ysgrythyrau', 'Am y Drindawd', 'Am Briodoliaethau Duw', 'Yn nghylch Ordinhadau Duw', 'Yn nghylch Gweithredoedd Duw', 'Yn nghylch Cwymp Dyn', etc. Subsequent additions include 'Ychydig Bennillion' ( i.e. a hymn by T. Jones), a transcript of a letter from Evan Harries (formerly of Llandovery) from Calabah Island, near Bombay to David Davies [Congregational minister], Swansea, 1805 (the writer's activities with the Regiment, the writer's religious experiences, greetings) (together with verses by the writer entitled 'Cyngor i Bregethwyr ieuaingc'); expository notes on 'Prynedigaeth', 'Perseverance of the Saints', 'Schism', 'The excellency of the Bible' and 'Astonishing Accuracy of the Bible'; and catechisms on 'Gwir Wybodaeth', 'Am Lygredigaeth Tafod' and 'Am Gyfiawnder Ymarferol'.

Poetry, mainly 'englynion', written for 'Cymdeithas Cymreigyddion Dolgellau' and a letter, 5 November 1831, to John Jones, secretary of the Society, from 'Ieuan ab Gruffudd' on behalf of 'Cymdeithas Cymreigyddion Caerludd'.

Cymdeithas Cymreigyddion y Fenni

Miscellaneous papers (chiefly bills, receipts and printed items (circulars, posters, and handbills), with a few items of correspondence), 1834-1847 and 1853, relating to Cymdeithas Cymreigyddion y Fenni (Abergavenny Cymreigyddion Society). The letters are from D. Ellis, London, [the Rev.] J. B. Evans, Cwmyoy, [John Evans] 'Ieuan ab Gruffydd', Y Fenni, J. Dorney Harding, Doctors' Commons, Josiah Thomas Jones, Merthyr and Cowbridge, [Thomas Evan Watkins] 'Eiddil Ifor', Blaenau Gwent, Edward Williams, Merthyr Tydfil, and [the Revd.] Wm. Williams ['Caledfryn'], Carnarvon, and although written mainly to acknowledge receipt of money they also complement the series contained in NLW MSS 13182-13183E. Printed items include the programme of a concert to be given by Mr. [John] Parry, 'Bardd Alaw', accompanied by Miss Woodham and Mr. Parry, Jun. [i.e. John Orlando Parry], under the patronage of Lady Hall of Llanover, at Abergavenny, 7 September 1838; 'Pennillion i anerch yr Arglwyddes Hall ('Gwenynen Gwent')' by [John Jones] 'Tegid'; proposals, 4 January 1847, for publishing Gardd Eifion, the poetical works of [Robert Williams] Robert ab [sic] Gwilym Ddu...; a copy of J. Jenkins, An A B K, pe kenteliou bêr hak eas evit deski lenn Brezonek en nebeudik amzer (Montroulez: A. L. M. Ledan, 1835); and a copy which belonged to Lady Llanover of Report of the Abergavenny Eisteddfod..., 12-13 October 1853, published by The Carnarvon and Denbigh Herald, and North and South Wales Independent, with two presscuttings, 1885, relating to the welcome home celebrations at Llanover in honour of Colonel Ivor Herbert and his brothers.

Various adjudications and poetical compositions in connection with the Anniversaries or Festivals of Cymdeithas Cymreigyddion y Fenni (Abergavenny Cymreigyddion Society), 1834-1845. The adjudications are by [the Reverend Thomas Price] 'Carnhuanawc', and [John Davies] 'Brychan Bach', Tredegar, 1834; [Taliesin Williams, 'Taliesin ab Iolo'], 1835 (mutilated); W. Ellis Jones, 'Cawrdaf', Caerfyrddin, and [the Reverend Thomas Price, 'Carnhuanawc'], 1836; Henry Hallam, W. Watkins, J. Morgan, W. Williams and John Daniel, Abergavenny (the last four being co-adjudicators), John Parry , 'Bardd Alaw', and [the Reverend Thomas Price, 'Carnhuanawc'], 1838; and Taliesin Williams ('Ab Iolo') [1845]. The poetical compositions include 'englynion' to [Thomas Bevan] 'Caradawc', by [Henry Evans] 'H. Ddu o Ddyfed' and [William Morgan] 'Gwilym Gelli Deg', 'Can Anerchiadol. I Gymreigyddion y fenni' by David Jones, 'Dewi Glan taf', Merthyr Tydfil, 'englynion' addressing the Society by 'Yr Arth-hir' and 'englynion' 'i yr hên . . . Iaith yr Omeraeg . . .' by [John (Emlyn) Jones] 'Ioan Emlyn', Crughywel, all dated October, 1837; 'englynion' 'ar Briodas W. Williams, Ysw. o Aberpergwm a Meistresan Smyth o'r Castellau' by 'Geoffrey', to Sir Charles Morgan, president of the Abergavenny Cymreigyddion Eisteddfod, 1838, by 'Cadifor' (endorsed 'y goraf') and 'Estron' (endorsed 'yr ail'), and to the Breton visitors to the Eisteddfod by 'Macsen Wledig' and 'Myfyr', all submitted for competition at the 1838 Eisteddfod; and 'englynion' entitled 'Annerchiad i Gymreigyddion y Fenni' by 'Cawr Morlais', Dowlais, 6 October 1840.

Darowen tithes; transcripts by Mary Richards; etc.

A volume originally used fairly extensively by Thomas Richards, Darowen as a rentroll of tithes set in the parish of Darowen, 1824-31. Beginning at the end, also in the hand of Thomas Richards, are a note from the Shrewsbury Chronicle, 1829, on the 'Rearing of Apple Trees'; medical, veterinary and household recipes; and accounts of receipts and disbursements (tithes, road rates, rents, etc.) of Thomas Richards, 1827-31. The remainder of the volume was used by Mary Richards, circa 1850-4, to record transcripts of a list of books in the library of Thomas Richards, Darowen; letters from Evan Richards to Thomas Richard[s], curate of Eglwys fach, near Dovy furnace, undated (religious meditations, a pocket Bible), Ch. Meyer, Llanrhaiadr [ym Mochnant], to T[homas] Richards, Llangynyw, undated (news of W. Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'], an invitation to the recipient and Arthur [James] John[e]s), Thos Jones, L[eintwar]dine [aft. of Creaton], to Thos. Among the insets and items mounted on the inside covers are a letter from J. Topham to [ ], 1786 (Mr Stocks's donation); an undated petition by William Davies, late of Cemmes, Llanegrin, Merioneth for a charitable contribution from Price Jones, Cyfronydd (petitioner claims that Cemmes, now in Pryce Jones's possession, was previously the property of his own father John Davies); and Hirnant rent accounts between T[homas] Richards and Captain Gwynne, 1816-18. One of the sources quoted by Mary Richards is a manuscript of Sir Thomas Llwyd, 'Person Cemes, Sir Drefaldwyn'. The outside upper cover is inscribed '1825 Tithe Book'.

Dyddiadur Robert Williams, Rhydycroesau,

A diary, January 1832 to 21 February 1847, of Robert Williams, perpetual curate of Rhydycroesau, near Oswestry from 1838 to 1879. Robert Williams served as curate of Llangernyw, Denbighshire from 1833 to 1836 and was appointed perpetual curate of Llangadwaladr in 1837. The diary, which is written in Welsh, contains references to events in his home district of Conway as well as to the areas where he served as a cleric. Beginning at the end of the volume there are poems by [John Jones] ('Tegid') (1828); a list of books entitled 'Llyvrau yn Ty Deon', 19 August 1832; accounts with booksellers, stationers, etc., 1832-9; extracts from Aristotle's Rhetoric; and lists of clothes ('Rhestr Dillad'), linen ('Lliain') and carpenter's tools ('Oferynau Saer').

A collection of autograph original poems and translations by Nathan Dyfed, with press cuttings of poems, mainly of Glamorgan interest, by him and by other authors.

Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Pontypridd, 1893,

A manuscript in the hand of William John Roberts ('Gwilym Cowlyd') containing two 'awdlau' on 'Pwlpud Cymru' by 'Gweledydd' and 'Hefin ab Gwyndaf' respectively, which were submitted for competition at Pontypridd National Eisteddfod, 1893, and an ?'incomplete adjudication on the 'hir a thoddeidiau' on 'Toriad y Dydd' at the same eisteddfod. 'Gwilym Cowlyd' was one of the adjudicators in both competitions. The prize for the 'awdl' was awarded to 'Obed-Edom (the Reverend J. Ceulanydd Williams, Maesteg) and for the 'hir a thoddaid' to 'Glan Gweryddon' (William Roberts, 'Gwilym Eryri').
