Llyfr Cywyddau ac Arfau Wiliam Cynwal

A manuscript containing holograph cywyddau by Wiliam Cynwal written between 1572 (f. 6) and his death in 1588. The poems are accompanied by illustrations of their subjects' coats of arms.

Llyfr Coch Nannau

A collection of awdlau and cywyddau written during the second quarter of the seventeenth century by William Phylip. The contents are almost entirely poetical, but the volume also includes transcripts of a treatise on poetical composition by William Middleton (pp. 274-302) and on Welsh metres by John Phillipp [Siôn Phylip] (pp. 303-313). The title page, table of contents and an index of poets are in the hand of Lewis Morris (pp. 1, 3-11, 13-14, 40).

Llyfr Gwyn Corsygedol

A collection of cywyddau, awdlau and carols partly in the hand of William Bodwrda. Poems by Wiliam Cynwal are especially well represented in this manuscript (pp. 91-185), which is written in three different but contemporary hands. Pages 193-280 are of an earlier date than the remainder of the manuscript.

A manuscript in three parts. The first part, possibly in the autograph of Thomas Jones (alias Twm Siôn Cati), comprises heraldry, with coloured illustrations of the coats of arms of the Britons and of the princes of North and South Wales, together with a number of their pedigrees (pp. 1-136). The second part comprises the pedigrees of the mothers of some of the principal families in Wales, together with a description of their coats of arms (pp. 137-178). The third part comprises poetry, a large portion of which is in the autograph of John Jones, Gellilyfdy (pp. 179-202).

A collection of 'cywyddau' and 'englynion' mainly in the early hand of Thomas Wiliems, otherwise called Thomas ap William, of Trefriw, with a few items in his later hand. The poets represented are Iorwerth Beli, G[o]ronwy Gyriog, Owen ap Llywelyn [ap] Moel [y Pantri], Dafydd ab Edmwnd, Lewis Môn, Tudur Aled, Lewis Daron, Guto'r Glyn, Iolo Goch, Inco Brydydd, Thomas Prys, Ieuan Brydydd Hir [Hynaf], Llawdden, Ieuan Deulwyn, Rhys Nanmor, Rhys Pennardd, Robin Ddu ap Siencyn Bledrydd, Ieuan ap Tudur Penllyn, Ithel ap Rhys, Gwilym ab Ieuan Hen, Tudur Penllyn, Dafydd Llwyd ap Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, Llywelyn ab y Gutun, Lewis Glyn Cothi, Mastr Harri, Ieuan [D]ew Brydydd, Rhys Goch Glyndyfrdwy, Ieuan ap Hywel Swrdwal, Gruffudd Gryg and Gutun Owain. There is a section at the end of the book in another hand of the close of the sixteenth century. Simwnt Vychan wrote one of the poems in this section. There are marginal notes, mainly genealogical, by John Davies, Rhiwlas, Llansilin throughout the entire manuscript.

Material relating to Tanybwlch itself includes the elegies on the death of Evan Evans, Tanybwlch, 1680, by Sion Davydd alias Penllyn [Sion Dafydd Las] and [Huw Morys], 'Cywydd Priodas Mr Evan Gruffydd a Mrs Sioned Meirig [Berth-lwyd]', 1716/1717, by Evan Williams, Egwy-lain, 'Cywydd yn dangos llwyddiant a happusrwydd Teulu Tan y Bwlch yn y flwyddyn 1717' by John Prichd Prys. Other items include the cywyddau in the bardic disputation between Edmwnd Prys and Wiliam Cynwal, 'Cywydd Marwnad Mr Ellis Wynn o Lâsynys ...' by John Rhydderch o'r Amwythig, 1734, 'Marwnad i'r haelaf elusengar ac anhepgor Wrda, Mr John Owen o Geidio yn Llyn' by Gronwy Owen, 1754, 'Cywydd y Farn' by W. Wynne, 1755, and elegies on two members of the Corsygedol and Nannau families, 1767-1768, by Rees Jones. 'A Collection of Welsh Pennillion, etc.', in the hand of Richard Williams, Denbigh, 10 November, 1814, containing 'penillion telyn', 'englynion', and extracts from 'cywyddau' by Siôn Brwynog, Wiliam Llŷn, Goronwy Owen, Lewis Morris ('Llywelyn Ddu o Fôn'), Robert Davies ('Bardd Nantglyn'), John Jones ('Jac Glanygors'), and John Cain Jones ('Siôn Ceiriog'). Among the titles are '3 Englyns written in Peblig Churchyard', 'Englynion i Gorph y gaingc', and 'Englyn in praise of West in the Denbigh Election 1820' (with a reply).

A negative photostat facsimile of Welsh MS. 2 in the John Rylands Library, Manchester, being an incomplete early eighteenth century collection of poetry, largely in the form of 'cywyddau', by Sion Philip, Rhisiart Philip, Edmund Price [sic], William Cynwal, Evan Bry[dy]dd hir, Lewis Môn, Sion Cent, Tudyr Aled, David ap Gwillim [sic], David Nanmor [sic] and others. On p. 76 is a text of 'Brenin dlysau ynys Brydai[n]'. Later eighteenth century additions include a certificate of a declaration of an oath by Edd. Vaughan of Lanymowddy, Merioneth, 2 November, 1750, that a red heifer sold at Dinnas Mowddy and the herd from which it is taken are free from the infection now raging among horned cattle in the Kingdom.

The greater part of the manuscript was written in the seventeenth century; but there are additions and marginal notes to the nineteenth century. There is an index ('Tabl y llyfr') to ff. 1--76, in a seventeenth century hand. Between ff. 4 and 6 are inserted two leaves (pp. 129-30, 135-6) of David Jones (Trefriw) (ed.): Cydymaith Diddan (Caer Lleon [1766]).
