Three dramatic Protestant dialogues translated into English, [c. 1540], by Robert Radcliffe of Jesus College, Cambridge, from the Latin Dialogi Aliquot of the French humanist and rhetorician Jean Tixier de Ravisi (Ravisius Textor), in a presentation manuscript for Henry VIII, with dedications: 'vnto oure moste Christian kynge supreme heed of the Chirche of Englande, and of oure happye remembrance, kynge henry the, viii' (p. 1); 'Your gracys humble subiect, Robert Radcliff professre of Artes, and schole maist[er] of Jesus Collegg in Cambrygg' (p. 89); the gift may be connected with Radcliffe's attempts to gain favour at court (cf. his letter, 1540, to Thomas Cromwell in Letters and Papers Foreign and Domestic of the Reign of Henry VIII, 23 vols (London, 1862-1932), xvi (1898), 204 (no. 400)). Little else is known of Robert Radcliffe; he cannot be identified with the dramatist Ralph Radcliffe (c. 1519-1559), who was schoolmaster, 1546-1559, at Hitchin, Hertfordshire, and is mentioned in John Bale, Scriptorum Illustrium Maioris Brytanniæ Catalogus, 2 vols (Basel, 1557-9, repr. Farnborough, 1971), I (1557), 700-701, and ibid., Index Britannniae Scriptorum (Cambridge, 1990), pp. xxxi, 332-334.
A note by Lord Harlech, November 1917, requesting prompt return of the volume, is attached inside front cover. Ancilliary materials relating to the (spurious) authorship of the manuscript are filed separately; they include four letters, 1917-1930, from Reginald L. Hine, Hitchin, and one, 1931, from Robin Flower, British Museum, to Lord Harlech, together with a press-cutting from The Morning Post, 1 September 1930 (Brogyntyn MS II.10a).

A lease by Richard, abbot of Strata F[lorida] to William ap John Voya, of Dywarchen [Court Grange] in the commote of Genau'r-glyn, dated at the chapter house, 1539; and a bond by Thomas ap D'd ap Gitto, Ieuan ap Ho'll Thomas, Thomas D'd ap Gwallter and others, all of Llanfihangel Castell Gwallter, and Ieuan ap Morgan of Llanbadarn Fawr, to Elizabeth I, that as tenants of the Queen’s land called Tyre y Mynyche or Dowarchen, they would jointly prosecute anyone that would injure or do wrong to them, and would jointly answer and fortify one another in maintaining their rights, 1558/9.

Lease for three lives granted by Sir Rice Maunxell, kt, to John Chalke of Penrice, Elyn his wife, and John their son, of a tenement called the ‘Hole’, now in the hands of Thomas Benett. Rent, xviij s. viij d., etc. [English]. Dated: 27th March, 31 Hen. VIII [1540]. Seal wanting. Signed by the lessor.

Crown Sale to Sir Rice Manxell, kt, for the sum of £938 6s. 8d., of the site of the late dissolved Abbey of Margam, the church, bell-tower, cemetery, and water-mill, the fishery in the water of Auen, the granges called Le Newe Graunge, Le Upper Graunge, Noge Court Graunge, and White-Crosse Graunge, the land called Southowse, St. Michael’s Graunge, Langlond, Portland, appurtenances in Kenfegge, Tangelust Grange, Langewithe Grange, Stormy Grange mine in Keuencrebrone al. Kevencrebur, Brombell, tithes in Penvey, etc., to be held as the last Abbot Lodowicus Thomas held them, for the twentieth part of a knight’s fee. Rent for Langewith Grange and the tithes of Penvey, 26s. 10½d. and for the site of the Abbey, etc., 77s. 5½d. Dated at Westminster, 22nd June, 32 Hen. VIII [1540]. Imperfect Great Seal of King Henry VIII, third type, bronzegreen wax (118mm), appended by green and white silk strands.

Grant by Anne Carne, widow of James Flemyng, gentleman (in consideration of a marriage between Margaret verz Thomas, her daughter, and William Thomas, son of Thomas ap William of Bridgend), to the said Margaret, the remainder of a lease of the farm or grange of Langewith, held under Sir Rice Manxell, kt, in tail, with remainder to Katherin verz Thomas, her other daughter. Award by Hugh Lewis, son and heir of John Lewis, and Ritherch ap Dd. ap Ieuan ap Eden., in a dispute between Robert ap R' ap Ll' ap Hulkyn and Hugh ap Robert ap R', his son, and Roland Gruff' of Porthamall, concerning the proposed marriage of the said Hugh and Margery, daughter of the said Roland.

Rent roll, dated 8 November 1540 (32 Hen. VIII), of the manor of Neath Ultra, Glamorgan, in the court of Francise Sowthewell and William Pooke, commissioners for the king, arranged into free and customary tenants.

Title deeds of houses and lands in the parish of Llangynfelyn, 1541-1760. Boundary clauses mention the bog and the river Clettwr. The earliest deeds record transactions of the Jankyn family, namely a gift by Jankyn ap Ieuan ap David, of Y Berth and Llain Bengam to Gr' ap Ho'll ap Ieuan Here, 1541; and purchases by Morgan Ll'n ap Jankyn of Y Garrack Selfock and other lands, [1547x1553]. Further deeds refer to Tir y Vron Goch, the water mill, Tythin Ynys Tyder in Llannerch Goch sold by John ap Rees ap John and Mawld his wife to Griffyth ap Ievan ap Jenkin, and Tythin Gwern Rees Taylour, 1574-1617; parties include Richard Phillipps of Aberystwyth and others. Properties acquired by the Pryse family include Lle Tuy D'd, Klwt y Maen Gwnion, Llyest y Wayn Bwll, a moiety of Y Neyadd and Tythen Y Neyadd, and Crosse Howse, purchased by John Pryse of Gogerddan, 1581; Tythin Allt Ieuan ap Eignion, purchased from Howell ap Jenkin ap Ieuan ap Dio and Henry ap Howell ap Jenkin by [Sir] Richard Pryse, 1596; Lle Llyest Ieuan ap Howell Benlloid in Blaen Clettwr and Melyn y Coyed, acquired by Sir Richard Pryse, 1605-1607; and Tuthin y Velin and Tuthin Ergid y Bwa, purchased by Dame Gwen Pryse, 1627. Later deeds comprise a bond to Richard John of Ynys Fochno, 1720; exemplification of a fine whereby Thomas Pryse gained a moiety of the mill and other, unspecified properties, 1727; and a lease by Richard Morgan of Henllys, of Tyddin Tynyrhelig and Lletty’rfran, 1760.
