This rather disparate group consists of three series of papers, comprising papers accumulated by the Wynn and Williams Wynn family in the course of their legal and political careers, 1631-[1749]; papers relating to their private interests, [17th cent., 1st half]-1799; and pedigrees, [pre-1580]-[post-1863].

Two Welsh literary manuscripts which suffered damage in the 1858 fire at Wynnstay; both were repaired and rebound following the fire.

A collection of Welsh strict-metre poetry of the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, including works by Ieuan Gethin ab Ieuan ap Lleision, Iolo Goch, Lewys Mon, Tudur Aled, Hywel Cilan, Gutun Owain, Guto'r Glyn, Ieuan ap Tudur Penllyn, Dafydd Llwyd o Fathafarn, Rhys Pennardd, Tudur Penllyn, Morus ap Hywel ap Tudur, Deio ab Ieuan Ddu, Gruffudd Hiraethog, Rhys o'r Hengaer, Wiliam Cynwal, Edward Brwynllys, Dafydd Nanmor, Sion Ceri, Huw Arwystl, Dafydd ap Siancyn ap Dafydd ap y Crach, Wiliam Llŷn, Rhys Cain, Rhisiart ap Hywel ap Dafydd ab Einion, Hywel Rheinallt, Gruffudd Llwyd ap Dafydd ab Einion Llygliw, Sion Tudur and Tomas Derllys. A cursory examination of the items included in the manuscript suggests that about ten of the poems are not recorded in other manuscripts. The volume is written in several hands of the late sixteenth century including those of Simwnt Fychan (ff. 73-75) and Wiliam Cynwal (ff. 79-81), two of the bardic pupils of Gruffudd Hiraethog, and also the hand of Rhys Cain, the herald bard of Oswestry, who was a pupil of Wiliam Llŷn, another of Gruffudd Hiraethog's pupils (ff. 4-6 verso, 101 verso-148 verso).

A volume in the hand of William Maurice of Cefn-y-braich, Llansilin, Denbighshire. The name 'Guil. Mauriciu[m]' appears on f. 4 verso and 'Guil. Mauricij' on f. 5. The entry on f. 4 verso, which reads '[ ] Brit. Gram[m]atica, ex Autographo [memb]ranaceo fidelitur transcript per Guil. Mauriciu[m] Lansilinensem tunc Studij Antiq. Tironem. Ano. D[omi]ni 1639. Aet: 19.', not only gives Maurice's age and an idea of his year of birth, which was not previously known, but also links the manuscript with item number 38 in a list of manuscripts at Wynnstay in Angharad Llwyd's 'Catalogue of Welsh manuscripts, etc. in North Wales', Transactions of the Cymmrodorion... 2.1 (1828), 36-58 (p. 53). A note added on f. 20 verso reads 'Y nawed dydd ar higain /o/fis Ionawr pann oedd oed Crist mil a chwechant a phedwar ar ddeg a rhigain y llosgodd dâs eithin Curn Foelfre gann dân or awyr' and also links the manuscript to the Llansilin area, the hill Gyrn Foelfre being just over a mile from Cefn-y-braich. The ink throughout is heavy dark brown ink, which is so characteristic of William Maurice's transcriptions. This is interspersed with red ink, especially when citing literary quotations as examples (ff. 31 verso-51, 53-57). A note in the hand of William Maurice (f. 57), incomplete because of fire damage, suggests that the manuscript was copied from a manuscript borrowed from '[ ] Siôn'. This may well be a reference to Richard ap Siôn of Sgorlegan, Llangynhafal (fl. 1578-1611), who is known to have transcribed copies of the bardic grammars [Peniarth MSS 159-160]. The original text probably measured 140 x 190 mm.; the text was arranged in two columns, each 90 mm. wide; most of the right hand column (recto) and left hand column (verso) has been lost as a result of the fire.
The manuscript contains the following: 'Llyma ddosbarth Edyrn dafod avr' (ff. 5-10 verso); 'Llyma ddechrav dosbarth y pvmp llyfr cerddwriaeth cerdd dafawd' (ff. 11-20 verso); 'pa sawl rhan y sydd o ymadrodd' (ff. 21-40 verso); 'Bellach yr ysbyswn am y pedwar messvr ar vgain cerdd dafawd' (ff. 41-54 verso); 'Bellach yr ysbyswnn am ba fodd a pha ddelw y dyleir moli pob gradd' (ff. 55-59); two verses of poetry, one of which is attributed to Huw ab Robert (f. 59 verso). Estate and family records, 1183-1957, of the Wynn and Williams Wynn family of Wynnstay, Denbighshire. The archive includes a group of architectural drawings, c. 1770, by James Byres; a group of early charters and deeds, 1183-1676, from the Cistercian Abbey of Strata Marcella (Ystrad Marchell) near Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, and elsewhere; antiquarian, legal and literary manuscripts; account rolls of Sir Richard Wynn, Treasurer to Queen Henrietta Maria, 1627-1649; manorial records relating to manors and boroughs in Denbighshire, Montgomeryshire and Shropshire, 1364-1895 (1934-40 and 1952 deposits); parliamentary election papers for Anglesey, Cardigan (county and borough), Denbighshire, Flintshire and Montgomeryshire, 1621-1883; family and estate correspondence, including part of that of Sir William Williams (1634-1700), Speaker of the House of Commons; rentals and account books, 1300-1925 (preserved in an almost unbroken series from the time of Sir William Williams); over 5000 title deeds and documents, [pre-1290]-[c. 1910], mainly relating to properties in the six North Wales counties and Shropshire, including records for Glascoed and Llanforda, Llwydiarth, Llangedwyn and Glanllyn, Plas-y-Ward, Rhiwgoch and Mathafarn, estates acquired either by marriage or purchase in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; together with papers relating to administration of the estates, 1573-1946; family papers, 1499-1913, county and central government administration papers, 1608-1880; two discrete groups of Much Wenlock estate records, 1534-1860, and Nantcriba estate records, 1381-1680; and various maps. There is an additional group of papers relating to the Wynnstay estate which came from the office of Longueville Gittins solicitors, Oswestry, dated 1582-1957.

Depositions concerning rights of turbary on Y Fownog Fawr. The tenements concerned are Tu Gwynne and The Bulch, in the parish of Machynlleth.

The collection comprises property in p's Oswestry, Bishop's Castle, Shropshire, Wrexham, Gresford, Ruabon, Holt, Llangollen, Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Llandegla, Llangedwyn, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog and Llansilin, co. Denb., Llansanffraid-ym-Mechain and Pennant, co. Mont., Bangor Is-coed, co. Flint, and Tilston, Cheshire. The pre-1897 Llangedwyn estate rents (the estate of Lady Williams Wynn) are not contained in separate volumes as below, but, rather, with other estate rentals in the series of Farm and Cottage receiving rentals. After 1911 (RD29), the Llangedwyn rents re-appear in those rentals. Some additional properties are included in the Llangedwyn rentals from 1897 onwards as a result of the transfer of certain properties from the Wynnstay and Ruthin estate to the Llangedwyn estate. Llangedwyn rents will also be found in the series of general rentals (see Farm and cottage rents, 1863-1898). The Llangedwyn rentals are half-yearly, ending either at Lady Day or Michaelmas. Cynllaith Owain chief rents, consisting of property in t's Lloran and Priddbwll [p. Llansilin], co. Denb., are also included from 1898 (RD4). However, since these chief rents were collected yearly, at Michaelmas, they will only be found in the Michaelmas volumes. Details of Cynllaith Owain chief rents before 1898 will be found in the general rentals, and in the series of Tithe, chief and fee farm rentals.

A transcript, made in 1832, of the collection of pedigrees compiled by John Ellis of Taicroesion about 1723, with additions and corrections. The Taicroesion collection ends on p. 289, and the remainder of the volume consists of pedigrees taken from different sources, including some based on information given by W. W. E. Wynne of Peniarth.
