Letter from Sukha Ram

Date(s) from item: Safar 25 sent: August 17 received 1766
Envelope numbered A No. 119
I have come here at Azimabad as a representative of Maharajah Januji Bhonsalah to conduct negotiations regarding the payment of chauth. As the Maharajah and you have very cordial relations and the Maharajah is very satisfied with your administration of these districts it is very much hoped that the payment of chauth to the Maharajah will be resumed. For this purpose I went to see Rajah Shitab Rai who told me that he would have to refer this matter to you at Calcutta and advised me that you do not give anyone any contribution under the heading of chauth but if the Maharajah approached him for help he may consider giving him some money as a favour. He is sending his vakil to Maharajah Januji Bhonsalh to conduct these negotiations. As you are not willing to consider any payment under the heading of chauth there is no scope for these negations to succeed. As I am your well-wisher, as well as an employee of the Maharajah, I suggest that you negotiate with me and reach a solution. For this I have already requested Rajah Shitab Rai and again request him that he should first negotiate with me and only after this, to conclude the agreement, he should send his vakil to the Maharajah in my company. We should be able to resolve this issue amiably in this manner

Letter from Muin al-Daulah Bahadur

Date(s) from item: Reg. yr 7, Rabi` I 1 received: August 7 received 1766
Maharajah Dhiraj Narayan owes land revenue taxes from the beginning of 1771 Fasli to the end of 1173 Fasli. In 1173 Fasli because of the taking over of this area by Maharajah Nand Kumar and his interference in the affairs of the state as well as because of the destruction caused by the armies of the King, his Vazir and Qasim Ali Khan Maharajah Dhiraj had the excuse not to pay dues for that year. After long negotiations with him he has ultimately agreed to pay the remaining taxes for 1172 and for the first four months of 1173 Fasli. For this he has signed an agreement with me that he will pay six Lacs and fifty thousand rupees as the overdue amount. I have kept one copy of this agreement and I am sending another copy to you for your views. He has agreed to pay the above amount in instalments.
Enclosure: Copy of an agreement signed by Maharajah Dhiraj Narayan dated 22 Safar, reg. yr. 7 agreeing to pay six Lac and fifty thousand rupees as the overdue amount of taxes for the years 1171 to 1173 Fasli in monthly and three-monthly instalments

Letter from Muhammad Tahir Husain

Date(s) from item: RabiI 3 Sunday sent; Rabi I 11 received 1180
I hope you have already received my earlier report, which I sent yesterday, 2nd Rabi` I. Early in the morning a guard from the Nawab arrived to inform me that I should attend the durbar. Following this, I went to the house of Sher Jang Bahadur and passed your letter to him. After some pleasant talk he brought the question of various issues under discussion and I replied according to what we had agreed between ourselves that the blame for not reaching an agreement lies on both sides and that we should implement what we have agreed. Afterwards he took me to the house of Rukn al-Daulah Bahadur and we discussed our affairs with him for five or six gharis. I presented your letters to him, which he read. He agreed with the contents and remarked that the English were dependant on him and if he does not agree with something anyone else can change his decision. Meanwhile, a chobdar came from the Nawab to take us to his durbar. We arrived at the Divan-khana and we, Rukn al-Daulah, Sher Jung and I went to meet the Nawab. After a while the Nawab retired to his quarters and then called Rukn al-Daulah, Samsam al-Daulah, Sher Jang, Muhammad Kabir Khan and me to his quarters. I presented your letters to the Nawab which he read. He took a gharyal in his hand and looked at it for two gharis and he made it chime. At that time the Vakils of Januji Bhonsalh and Madhu Rao and Ismail Khan arrived to present their petition that they will arrive there before the Dusehra festival. The Nawab, addressing Rukn al-Daulah, said that we have enough forces of our own and do not have to wait for these people. Afterwards, addressing me, he remarked that Siraj al-Daulah was such a nice man. I got up from my seat and conveyed your greetings and best wishes to him. He expressed his pleasure in this and remarked that this is what is expected from my subordinates. Addressing Madar al-Maham he said the Europeans think there was no one to challenge them. Now they will understand that it would be better to hand over the fort to us. After four gharis we took leave and Sher Jang and I came back to Divan-khanah while Rukn al-Daulah stayed behind with the Nawab. He came out after a while and took leave from them and returned to my house
