Breconshire and Monmouthshire surveys

Rental survey

Volume containing typescripts intitled 'Copy schedules to settlement of the Tredegar estates dated 1st July 1896. Rider, Heaton & Co., Lincoln's Inn'. The volume contains carbon copies of the schedules to a deed of settlement dated 1 July 1896. The first schedule (pp. 80-419) lists freehold estates and hereditaments (leases dated at lease 1826-95) in the counties of Monmouthshire, Glamorgan, Breconshire, Herefordshire, Kent and Middlesex, and in the city of London. Eighteenth century abstracts of deeds relating to properties in the parishes of Llyswen, 1628-1737, Llandyfalle, 1637-1714, Bronllys, 1660, Glasbury, 1635-1703, Rhydri, 1712, Llanwynno, 1714, Roath, 1738, and deeds relating to the marriage settlement of William Morgan, esq., son and heir apparent of Thomas Morgan of Tredegar, esq., and Blanch Morgan of Dderw, spinster, 1660-61. Enclosed are drafts of the abstracts, and a copy lease of four parcels of land (31a.) called Glennydd, in the parish of Llandyfalle, Breconshire, 1783.

Woodcutters' account and schedule of leases

This volume was initially used as a woodcutters' account, 1748-49, giving the names of woods, the names of the woodcutters employed at each, the cords cut by each man, and the amount paid. The woods cut include woods in Miskin, Cwm Cynon, Ystradyfodwg, Llanwynno, Gwaelod-y-waun, Bedwellte, Llanfihangel, Gelli-gaer, Gelliwastad, Llanedern, Maes-teg, Rhydri, Llanisien, Merthyr, Henllys, Llantrisant, Llanfabon, and Risca, and belong to William Basset, esq., William Morgan, esq., Thomas Morgan, esq., Henry Morgan, esq., Roger Powell, esq., Gabriel Lewis, esq., Lord Plymouth, and Thomas Lewis, esq., among others. Many of the accounts are settled with an acknowledgement of having received the balance, often as charcoal, often signe by a collier. -- The other end of the volume was subsequently (c.1779) used for abstracts of leases in Machen, 1690-1778, Bedwas, 1722-79, Mynyddislwyn, 1724-78, Bedwellte, 1697-1776, Gelli-gaer and Merthyr, 1770, Eglwysilan, 1765-75, Marshfield, 1710-76, St Mellons, 1773-76, Coedcernyw, 1772, Llanfihangel-y-fedw, 1773-76, St Brides, 1776, St Brides and Peterstone, 1773, and Rumney, 1771.

Abstracts of Tredegar deeds,

Abstract of Tredegar estate title deeds, 1578-1723 (pp. 0-c.16), and observations (pp. c.17-19). The document is entitled ‘Abstract of deeds belonging to the title of Tredegar estate in the counties of Monmouth Brecon & Glamorgan (which were taken out of the evidence room by Mr Jones as set forth in the schedule annexed to def’ts Jones’s answer) with a view to find how the customary hold estate is affected by former wills & testaments’, and endorsed ’24 Nov’r 1774, gave a copy to Cha’s Morgan esq’r’. Page 20 is the original outside of the file, and is endorsed with a shorter version of the title. The document is probably related to Morgan v. Morgan (L 1).

Schedule of papers

Volume intitled 'Inventory of deeds & papers in drawers in the study, also of cupboards, Oct'r 1826'. The inventory of drawers numbered 1-64 is followed by the contents of cupboards and tin chests in the library, the study, the nursery and the evidence room. This volume is a draft or working copy of (AES 3/4), the original contents and the pencilled annotations being similar. -- The volume was originally used for John Morgan's cash account of receipts and disbursements on account of the Dderw estate in Breconshire, 1774-1780, the rear of the volume being intitled 'Therrow'.
