Deed of covenant by Mary Bryan Smith of Ye Wells Hotel, Llandrindod, Radnorshire, granting Lord Tredegar exclusive rights to a first floor suite of rooms for seven years, including the right to alter and furnish the rooms, and the best attendance, food and other services when he or his relatives or friends are in occupation.

Kyrle Fletcher; a typescript essay by Evan Morgan entitled 'The Book of Morgan compiled from the Tredegar Archives'; agreements between Evan Morgan and his publishers for the publication of three books of poetry; a printed broadsheet balled, 'How comes this exotic, this out-coming blade', [temp. Geo. III]; printed General Orders, 1803-1806, from Charles Morgan, Judge Advocate General's office, laying before the King the proceedings of various military courts martial; correspondence addressed to Lord Tredegar, Sir Charles Morgan and Hugh Owen Owen, MP; and copies (20 cent.) of correspondence, 1810-1824, mainly between Rev. Peter Paul Dobree (1782-1825) and George Pryme (1781-1868), both Fellows of Trinity College, Cambridge, relating mainly to the classics and the Peninsular War. -- A carbon copy of the NLW description for the annual report (1976-77, p. 53), and a draft inventory of the contents of the three files, are in the first folder.

The journal of Rudolph de Lisle, private secretary of Lord Tredegar, of a journey on Lord Tredegar's yacht, 'HMY Liberty' (and overland), from Cowes - Gibraltar - Marseilles - Toulon - Cannes - Elba - Naples - Syracuse - Valletta, Malta - Kavokiro, Crete - Port Said, Egypt - Ishmailiyeh - Suez - (overland to Jerusalem and Bethlehem) - Ishmailiyeh - Port Said - Alexandria - Tunis - Bona, Algeria - Phillippeville - Algiers - Bonjie - Almira - Malaga - Gibraltar - Cadiz - Seville (overland to Madrid - San Sabastian - Bordeaux - Paris) - Cherbourg - Cowes. The journal includes photographs taken on the trip.

Chief officer's log books (no's 4-10) of the steamship and hospital ship 'Liberty', lent to the government by Lord Tredegar.

Original bundle of papers, mainly letters, relating to Lord Tredegar's yacht 'Liberty' (1571 tons), including its service as a hospital ship during the First World War, and a memorandum of agreement for her sale to R. P. Houston, MP, in 1920. Also a list of mercantile Fleet auxiliaries, armed merchant cruisers &c., Aug. 1914.

A presentation volume from the churchmen and churchwomen (eighty-eight names) of Llanfaches to Godfrey Charles Morgan, viscount Tredegar, patron of the benefice of Llanfaches, in grateful thanks for the restoration of the parish church.

An undated manuscript volume entitled 'Fringillidae britanniae, or British finches: their description, habitation, nests, eggs, food, and song'. The volume gives standard and dialect English names, French, German and Latin names, a description and a watercolour picture for each of fourteen different finches. The manuscript is written in a juvenile hand, and the inside cover and the title page have been endorsed 'Gwyneth' and 'EEC'.

Original bundle comprising a copy probate of the will (1876) and three codicils (1881, 1884, 1886) of Charles Octavius Swinnerton Morgan of the Friars, esq., and extracts from the will relating to his quarter share in the Tredegar Wharf Company.

Armorial pedigree roll of the Morgan family of Crindai, showing the descent of William Morgan of Crindai (b. c.1617, fl. 1663) from the generation of Miles fitz Walter (c.1097-1143), earl of Hereford. The roll appears to be contemporanous with the Morgan pedigree rolls of 1633 (P 1/6-7).

The file comprises an illuminated presentation volume signed by 160 of the farm tenants on the Monmouthshire estate, presented to Godfrey Charles Morgan, second baron Tredegar, 'to express our deep sense of gratitude to your Lordship for the remissions of rent you have so handsomely made; also for your invariable kindness and consideration towards us during an exceptionally trying period'.

A printed genealogy by George Blacker Morgan, Jan. 1884, of the Morgan families of Llantarnam, Monmouthshire, and of Monasterevan, County Kildare, and pages from Notes and Queries, 25 Oct.-8 Nov. 1884, relating to a reported connection between the two families.

A photograph album containing photographs of The Friars, interior views of its rooms, and of items from Octavius Morgan's collections, including clocks (16-17 cent.), official gilt keys of the chamberlains of the emperors of Germany (Charles VI, Francis I, Joseph II, Leopold II and Francis II), Russia (Paul and Alexander I) and Austria (Ferdinand I) and of the kings and other royals of Britain, Denmark, Prussia, Spain (Charles III-IIII), Portugal, Poland, Sweden, the electors of Cologne, Mayence, Treves, Saxony, Baden and the Palatinate, the prince-bishops of Bamberg and Wurtzburg, the electors and kings of Bavaria, the dukes and kings of Wurtemberg, and Ferdinand III of Austria and grand duke of Tuscany (all prob. 18-19 cent.), and other unknown official keys, a collection of papal and other large rings of the 15 cent., including rings of popes John XXII, Martin V, Eugenius IV, Nicholas V, Callixtus III, Pius II, Paul II and Innocent VIII, and cardinals Gabriel Condolmerio, Franciscus Della Rovere, Battista Zeno and Ascanius Sforza Visconti. The volume also contains loose photographs of Tredegar House and a funeral monument to Maria Margarita Morgan (d. 1808, aged 39).

A chap-book of Octavius Morgan, entitled 'Miscellaneous notes on archæological and other matters', containing notes, and transcripts and inserted cuttings of articles on a wide variety of subjects of historical and antiquarian interest, including royal and papal heraldry, the crowns of England, diamonds, masonic insignia and dates, floods in Monmouthshire, and the succession of the emperors and electors of the Holy Roman Empire.

Six visiting books, three dated 1860, 1861 and 1865, and three undated, but contemporary. Each book appears to have been used for only one season, with the dated entries comprising the day of the month (April-June) and the name and address of the visitor.

A family tree of the Morgan family of Ruperra, from Thomas Morgan of Machen (fl. 1538) to Elizabeth (d. pre-1671), wife of Edmond Thomas of Wenvoe (1633-1677), and sister and heir of Thomas Morgan of Ruperra (d. pre-1655). The roll is signed Henry Salusbury Milman, 1 March 1856.

The file comprises the commissions of Godfrey Charles Morgan to be a JP in Monmouthshire, 1855, Arthur John Morgan to be deputy lieutenant of Breconshire, 1876, of Frederic Courtenay Morgan to the honourary rank of colonel of the 1st Monmouthshire volunteer rifle corps, 1881, of Godfrey Charles, baron Tredegar, to the honourary rank of colonel of the Royal Monmouthshire Engineer Militia, 1895, a covering letter from the Monmouthshire Territorial Force that accompanied their flag, presented to Viscount Tredegar, 1911, Baron Tredegar's commission as temporary lieutenant (RNR) in command of the hospital yacht 'Liberty' attached to 'HMS Columbine', Aug. 1914, and as temporary commander (RNVR) at HMS Victory, Dec. 1914, and as temporary commander (RNVR) of 'HMS President', May 1916, and his transfer to the retired list, 1926. -- A testimonial from the teaching staff and pupils of the Cardiff Intermediate School for Girls, signed by the staff and the heads of forms on behalf of the girls, and presented to Lord Tredegar, on the occasion of entering on the completed buildings, [post 1895], the appointment of Lord Tredegar as a life member of the court of the university of Wales, 1901, and a description of the casket presented to Viscount Tredegar with the honourary freedon of the city of Cardiff, 1909.

Original bundle of notes, letters, pedigrees, abstracts of records, and other papers relating to the Herbert family, earls of Pembroke, the Herbert families of Ewias, Coldbrook, and St Julians, the Morgan families of Tredegar, Pen-carn, and Llangatwg Lingoed (later of Charmston in the Golden Valley in Herefordshire), the Gould family, the Stradling family of St Donats in Glamorgan, the Thomas family of Llanbradach and Ystradmynach, and loose papers, including on the lords lieutenant of Monmouthshire, William Baker, esq. (d. 1651), a Dominican monk of Abergavenny, the excavation of an unnamed barrow, the tomb of Sir Rhys ap Thomas (1451-1527) in Carmarthen church, and the rebuilding of the church at Old Alresford in Hampshire. Many of the letters are addressed to Octavius Morgan, and many of the notes are in his handwriting. -- The Morgan papers include photographs, 1902, of the Tredegar hatchments in Machen church, and a copy of a song, 'On Sir William Morgan, knight of the Bath's losing the badge of the order', ascribed to Stanhope, earl of Chesterfield, or to Sam Wesley, usher of Westminster School, and transcribed from [BL?] Add. Ms. 14934, fo. 213. -- The photographs are contact-print sized photographs glued to a piece of paper endorsed 'Tredegar "Achievements" "Hatchments" in Machen Church, 1902'. The hatchments are those of 'Jane wife of Thomas Morgan esq'r M.P. died 1767 aged 64', 'Thomas Morgan esq'r M.P. of Tredegar died 1769 aged 67', 'Mary wife of Charles Morgan esq'r M.P. died 1777 aged 42', 'Charles Morgan esq'r M.P. of Tredegar died 1787 aged 51', 'Anna Lascelles died 1862', 'Francis wife of Rev'd A. Morgan died 1867', and 'Rev'd Augustus Morgan died 1875' (two copies). -- A copy of a nine-verse song, 'The Cambro-Briton robb'd of his bauble' (Printed London, 1727), and a late-19th century bowdlerised six-verse version entitled 'On Sir William Morgan of Tredegar losing his star of the order of the Bath, 1727' have been added to the file for convenience. Annexed to 'The Cambro-Briton' is 'Bob and Harry: a new occasional song', apparently relating to the knightly Bob (aka Robin?) demeaning himself by answering Harry's pamphlet in kind.

Pedigree roll drawn by Water Hopkins, and finished at Brecon, 10 Dec. 1633, showing Sir William Morgan of Tredegar's lines of descent from various great personages, including from Edward I, king of England; Alfonsus, king of Castille; Philip, king of France; Peter, king of Spain; William, earl of Henalt [Edward III's father-in-law]; Edmund of Woodstock, earl of Kent; Richard, earl of Arundel; Roger Quincy, earl of Winchester; William, earl of Ferrers; John, lord Wake; James, lord Audley; Walter Devereaux, lord Ferrers of Chartley; Ralph, lord Boteller; Robert, lord Whittney; and Thomas, lord Roch. -- The descents are padded to some extent, with some lines of descent effectively duplicating others, including those showing Sir William Morgan's descent from Edward II, Edward III and Edmund of Langley, duke of York, son, grandson and great grandson of Edward I; and from Thomas Holland and Edmund Holland, earls of Kent, the grandson and great grandson of Edmund of Woodstock, earl of Kent. -- The roll encloses three pages of notes by Octavius Morgan, including "this pedigree is a good illustration of the practice of ostentatious pedigree making which prevailed in the reigns of Elizabeth I, James I & Charles I. It probably took its use from the researches which were made in the time of Henry VII to ascertain the Tewdwr descent, and was revived again in the time of Edward VI when a great stir was made to draw out the Herbert pedigree on the creation of the second Earl of Pembroke ..."
