Aberystwyth Poor Law Union records

Aberystwyth Poor Law Union records, comprising orders of the Poor Law Commissioners, 1836-1837; collectors’ monthly statements, 1888-1897, a poor rate book, 1909, and a notice of objection (postmark 1924).

Merioneth mining and quarrying leases

Leases mainly by members of the Ormsby Gore family of Brogyntyn, of lead, copper, manganese and sulphur mines, and of slate quarries in the parishes of Llanaber, Llandanwg, Llandecwyn, Llanddwywe, Llanelltud, Llanfihangel-y-traethau and Llanfrothen in the county of Merioneth, 1837-1947. The sites include Bwlch-y-Plwm, Pant y maesudor and Pant-y-Maesydd, 1837-1875, Rhosiger, Farchynys and Sylfaen, 1859-1888, Lletty Fwyalch and Llechwedd Du, 1867-1872, Hafod Ucha, 1872-1873, Rhosydd, 1890-1891, and others. One file (ref. 55/8) contains a lease by Queen Victoria to William Richard Ormsby Gore of coal, metals, metallic minerals and ores, limestone and slate on or under land in the parishes of Llanenddwyn, Llanddwywe and Llanelltud, Merioneth, 1894.

Mabinogion manuscripts

Manuscripts of Lady Charlotte Guest, 1838-[1843], relating to her translations of nine of the twelve Welsh folk tales published as The Mabinogion from the Llyfr Coch Hergest, and Other Ancient Welsh Manuscripts, with an English Translation and Notes, Parts I-VI (1838-1845), namely 'Iarlles y Ffynnawn', 'Peredur ab Efrawc', 'Geraint ab Erbin', 'Kulhwch ac Olwen', 'Breuddwyd Rhonabwy', 'Pwyll Pendevig Dyved', 'Branwen verch Llyr', 'Manawyddan vab Llyr' and 'Math vab Mathonwy'. The manuscripts consist of transcripts of the original Welsh texts, some in the hand of John Jones (Tegid) and other scribes; drafts of Charlotte Guest's translations; and drafts for her notes to each translation. Most of the manuscripts consist of author's copy for the printers. None of the material relates to 'Breuddwyd Maxen Wledig', 'Kyfranc Lludd a Llevelys' or 'Hanes Taliesin', the three remaining tales published in the seventh and final part (1849).

Land improvement and compensation scheme applications

Papers relating to applications by the Brogyntyn estate mainly between 1870 and 1955, under government schemes in accordance with the Improvement of Lands Acts 1864 and 1899, the Settled Land Acts, 1882 to 1890, and the Town and Country Planning Acts, 1947 and 1954. The lands in question included Brogyntyn mansion, Home Farm (Ty Coch), Glyn, Sylfaen and Ystumcegid, 1870-1883; Penrhos, Old Port and Cross Lanes (Pentrepant), 1903-1905; Mardy Farm, Selatyn, 1905-1906; Ystumcegid Isaf, 1911; and Brogyntyn mansion and farm, Oerley Hall, The Mount, Brick Kilns, Harlech Camp, stone quarries and sand pits in Shropshire, Caernarfonshire and Harlech, 1949-1955.

Miscellaneous deeds and documents (Wynnstay estate sales)

Miscellaneous files containing mainly draft and copy conveyances of properties belonging to the Wynnstay estate, sold by Sir Watkin Williams Wynn and/or the trustees of the settled estates in Denbighshire, Merioneth, Montgomeryshire and Salop, and the Maenan estate, Caernarfonshire, 1840-1938. Fields and unnamed properties generally have not been included in the file descriptions.

Solicitors’ bills

Bills of costs by the various solicitors who served the Gogerddan estate, namely Charles Deare of Temple, London, Parry and Atwood of Aberystwyth, A.J. Hughes of Aberystwyth, and Boys and Tweedie of Ely Place, London (later Tweedie of Lincolns Inn Fields), 1841-1913. The bills are very detailed, showing costs incurred for work on the Pryse family settlements, land sales and purchases, mortgages and civil lawsuits, usually over land ownership. Prominent areas of concern are the claims of Pryse Pryse as the executor of Edward Loveden Loveden; the executorship of the will of Pryse Pryse (d. 1849); the administration of Pryse Loveden (d. 1855); the lease and subsequent sale of the Buscot Park estate and parts of the Wootton and Woodstock estates; the marriage settlements of Pryse Loveden [and Margaretta Jane Price] and their son Pryse Loveden and Louisa Joan Lewes; the change of Pryse Loveden’s name and arms to Pryse Pryse, and his baronetcy, 1866; the rights of the Pryse family as lords of the manor of Genau’r-glyn and the Genau’r-glyn enclosures; a dispute with Sir Watkin Williams Wynn over sporting in the manor of Cyfeiliog; the sale of Gogerddan land to the Welsh Coast Railway; and purchases of Cwmcynfelyn, Glanfread, and the Penyberth and Penrhyn-coch estates.

Gogerddan and East Darren lead mine cost books and ledgers

A separate accession of six volumes of lead mine records from the Gogerddan and East Darren mines, Cardiganshire, 1842-1894. They comprise a rough cost book from the Gogerddan mines, 1842-1847; three cost books of East Darren mine, 1852-1880; a setting book of East Darren Mines Co. Ltd, 1888-1894; and a ledger [from East Darren mine], 1889-1894.

Denbighshire deeds and documents

Deeds and other documents relating to properties in the parish of Llangollen, Denbighshire, owned by the Brogyntyn estate, 1844-1898. The locations include Dinbren and Siamber Wen, Erw Garn Ucha, Trefor, Canal Side, land sold to Thomas Gee in 1895, and Llangollen School, 1898.

Accounts

Drafts and final accounts of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, sixth Baronet Wynnstay, and the trustees under the will of his father the late Sir Watkin Williams Wynn (d. 1840), 1844-1885; Longueville and Co.’s accounts with Sir Watkin Williams Wynn and the trustees, 1853-1869; and the succession account of the sixth Baronet, 1885-1886. Most of the accounts list properties which were sold by the Wynnstay estate, their locations and the names of the purchasers, or properties valued for the succession acccount.

Letters of Boys and Tweedie, solicitors

Correspondence of the firm of solicitors, Hale, Boys and Austen, later called Boys and Tweedie, of Ely Place and Lincolns Inn Fields, London, 1845-1924. There are two sub-series, comprising letters addressed to the firm by the Pryse family, their trustees, agents and other parties 1845-1870, and letters by Boys and Tweedie to various members of the Pryse family of Gogerddan or their representatives, 1852-1924. The majority of the letters deal with legal and financial aspects of the Gogerddan estate management. Areas of particular concern include the Pryse family settlement of 1846, financial and legal affairs affecting the Buscot, Woodstock and Gogerddan estates after the death of Pryse Pryse in 1849, the mortgages on the Welsh estates, the administration of the estates by the trustees following the death of Pryse Loveden in 1855, the Gogerddan inheritance, investment in stocks, and financial provisions under terms of the family settlements, notably the portions due to Jane Elizabeth Loveden and Harriet Thiebault (previously Thayer), from 1845, and the allowances to the younger sons and daughter of Sir Pryse Pryse, from the time of his death in 1906.

Leases and licences granted by members of the Ormsby Gore family of Brogyntyn, of minerals and slate quarries in Caernarfonshire, 1845-1890. The locations include Fron Oleu in the parish of Penmorfa, 1845-1872, 1875-1881, Hendre Ddu, Dolbenmaen, 1860-1874, Mynyddednyfed and Braich-y-Sant, Cricieth, 1861, Plas yn Pennant, Penmorfa, 1862-1866, Ty Cerrig, Penmorfa, 1864-1880, and elsewhere in Beddgelert, Cricieth, Llanfihangel-y-Pennant and Penmorfa, 1849-1890. One file contains licences to make railways or tramways for the transport of slate from the quarries, 1855-1873
