A composite volume containing transcripts of Welsh strict-metre poems in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg'). Pp. 19-51 contain fourteen 'cywyddau' by, or attributed to, Siôn Cent, with Nos. 7, 8, and 12 attributed alternatively to Ieuan Du Dai Bowain, Thos. Derllys, and Lln. ab Howel ab Ieuan ab Gronwy respectively. Pp. 67-205 (previously paginated 1-141) contain a collection of seventy-four 'cywyddau' (No. 74 incomplete) with the general superscription 'Barddoniaeth Dafydd ap Gwilym' probably compiled by Edward Williams circa 1780 (see IMCY, tt. 7, 119, 42; see also the relevant sections of the same work for the poems or sections of poems in this group which were probably written by Edward Williams himself and attributed to Dafydd ap Gwilym). Pp. 209-454 (pp. 209-429 previously numbered 1-221) contain a corpus of approximately two hundred and fifty 'cywyddau', 'awdlau', etc., under the general superscription 'Barddoniaeth Dafydd ap Gwilym' and with a concluding note 'Diwedd Gwaith Dafydd ap Gwilym o Lyfr Mr. Owain Jones o Lanmihangel Glyn y Myfyr'. These poems are believed to have been transcribed by Edward Williams, circa 1775, from a manuscript collection of Dafydd ap Gwilym's work [now Bangor MS 6 in the library of the University College of North Wales, Bangor] compiled by Owen Jones ('Owain Myfyr') mainly from the manuscripts of Lewis and William Morris (see IMCY, tt. 3, 7; IM, t. 213; and Thomas Parry (gol.): Gwaith Dafydd ap Gwilym (Caerdydd, 1952), tt. clxv-clxix and the accompanying chart). Pp. 457-60 contain poems by, or attributed to, Siôn ap Howel ap Lln. Uchan, Siôn Cent, R. Goch o'r Yri, and Dafydd ap Edmund, and pp. 461-73 a further group of twenty-one 'cywyddau' by, or attributed to, Dafydd ap Gwilym. Some of the notes accompanying the poems in this volume are in English.

A volume containing transcripts of Welsh verse in strict metre (consisting mainly of 'cywyddau') transcribed, October [18]89 - February [18]90, by I[saac] F[oulkes] [newspaper proprietor and publisher]. Many of the poems are annotated to indicate that they were copied out of a volume in the possession of 'W.J.' of Llangollen, and the whole work appears to be an incomplete transcript of NLW MS 670D, which itself consists of a collection of Welsh poems transcribed by William Jones ('Bleddyn'), antiquary, local historian, etc., of Llangollen. A note on p. 123 indicates that three 'englynion' by [Thomas Edwards] 'Twm o'r Nant', which were to be found at this point in W[illiam] J[ones]'s volume [NLW MS 670D], had not been copied by the transcriber, as he intended including them in a proposed new edition of that poet's works, to be published by him in 1889. A second note on the same page indicates that, similarly, fourteen 'cywyddau' by Tudur Aled had not been transcribed in the present volume, but had been copied into another book, with the intention of publishing these and other poems by the same bard, together with poems by Guto'r Glyn and Sion Tudur. In fact, fourteen 'cywyddau' and four other poems by Tudur Aled, and all of the poems by Guto'r Glyn and Sion Tudur, which appear in NLW MS 670D, have been omitted from the present volume, the presence of poems by the two latter bards in NLW MS 670D being usually indicated by the transcriber by quoting the title, or title and first line, of such works. A note on p. 153 states that eighty ' cywyddau' by Dafydd ap Gwilym [which appeared in William Jones's book, i.e ., NLW MS 670D, pp. 149-263], had been used to correct the published edition of that poet's work ('Yma daw LXXX Cywydd o waith Dafydd ab Gwilym, y rhai a ddefnyddiwyd i gywiro ei waith argraffedig'). These eighty poems, and also five retaliatory poems composed by Gruffydd Grug, in a poetic contention with Dafydd ap Gwilym, and found interspersed among the eighty 'cywyddau', have been omitted from the present volume. A further note on p. 264 states that the last three 'cywyddau' [in NLW MS 670D] had not been copied, as the transcriber believed the text to be so corrupt, that they did not merit transcription. A fly-leaf is marked 'Bk i', and this possibly connects the volume with NLW MS 19313, which, marked on a fly-leaf 'Bk ii', consists of a similar volume of Welsh verse transcribed, March - April [18]90, by I[saac] F[oulkes], again, by inference, from a book in the possession of W[illiam] J[ones].

III pp. 569-76); 'awdlau' and 'cywyddau' by Wiliam (Gwilym) Lleyn ('Allan o Lawysgrifau Ieuan Lleyn - 1799'), transcribed at Llangïan, May 1854, with collations and annotations dated to 1856; 'Gwaith Beirdd Cymru. Amryw', being 'awdlau' and 'cywyddau' by Sion Tudur, Tudur Aled, Deio ab Ieuan Du, Hywel ab Reinallt, Hywel ap Daf[ydd] ap Ieuan ap Rhys (Hywel Dafi), Richard Philip(s), Gwyrfyl Ferch Howel Vaughan (Gwerfyl Mechain), Ieuan Tew, Bedo Hafesb, Syr Robert Myltwn, Ieuan Brydydd Hir [Hen], Tudur Penllyn, Rhys Cain, Morys ab Howel ab Tudur, Gutto'r Glyn, Iolo Goch, Llywelyn Goch ap Meurig Hen ('o Nannau'), Huw Llwyd Cynfel and William Lleyn, with collations and annotations by D. A volume of transcripts of poetry by Dafydd ap Gwilym, together with a few 'englynion' and 'cywyddau' by Wm Morris, G[ruffudd] Grug, Dafydd ap Edmund, Rhys Gôch Glan Ceiriog, Dafydd Nanmor, Iolo Goch, R[obin] Ddu, and some anonymous 'englynion'. The transcripts are taken from UCNW Bangor MS 6. A note by Mary Richards, Darowen on p. 1 ascribes the volume to John William[s], musician ('Cyfansoddwr Tona'), Dolgelley, probably John Williams ('Ioan Rhagfyr') (see Thomas Parry (gol.): Gwaith Dafydd ap Gwilym (Caerdydd, 1952) pp. c1xviii-clxix). At the end of the volume is a table entitled 'Rhannau Monwent Dar-Owen megis y dosparthwyd ag y cyweiriwyd hwynt ar eiriol David Davies vicar yno, gan ddechrau, o barth dwyrain Ty'r Vicar ag felly diwygio oddi amgylch Mai yr 28 1636' (' ... carefully transcribed out of the original by me Lewis Jones Vicar of Darowen' - a Chopiwyd genyf inneu or Terrier Darowen. M. R. Dar[owen]'). Tipped into the volume are a bond, 14 February 1690/1, from David Jones of Cowarch, Merionethshire, gent. to John Thomas Rees of the same, yeoman for the observance of covenants, and a poem in free metre entitled 'Myfyrdod y Parchedig Mr [Roderick] Lewis Periglor Llanbrynmair Uwchben Bedd ei ddiweddar Wraig', 1829. Among a number of items laid on the inside lower cover is Ychydig o gynghorion buddiol i Bobl Ieuainc, Wrth fyned i wasanaeth (Treffynnon, n.d.).

A commonplace book of Merioneth interest largely in the hand of Robert Prys Morris ('Robyn Frych'), Dolgellau. Rhydderch, Wm Elias, Edward Moris, Ifan Gruffydd leiaf, G[utto'r] Glyn, Einian ap Gwalchmai, D[afydd] Nanmor, William Phylip, Huw ab Ifan, Edmund Prys, Gruffydd Phylip, [Robert Prichard] 'Robin Raber', Dafydd Owain o'r Gaerwen ('Marwnad Robert Roberts Pregethwr enwog yn mhlith y Methodistiaid ...') and Gronwy Owen, followed by a collection of the poems of the Reverend Mr Gronwy Owen ('Casgliad o waith y Parch. Mr Gronwy Owen, a Alwei ei hun Gronwy Ddu o Fôn'), with items by [Evan Evans] 'Ieuan Brydydd hir', Huw Huws Alias y Bardd Coch o Fôn, Lewis Morys (poetry and a letter) and Rhobert Huws o Benmynydd ('Robin ddu o Fon'). The contents also include some pedigrees (Achau Penyberth, Richard Llwyd o Griciaith, Bach y Saint, Penllech., Wern Penmorfa, Mostyn, Cors-y-Gedol, Castell-march, Cefn-Llanfair, Wern fawr, Penarth. etc.), 'Ychydig o hanesion' ('Am feibion Noa', etc.), miscellaneous notes, weaving patterns etc. The volume is written in several hands: pp. 1-84 are probably in the autograph of John Roberts ('Siôn Lleyn'); pp. 117-124 are in the autograph of Robert Prichard ('Robin 'Raber') and most of the remainder, if the lettering on the spine is correct, could be in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion').

A composite volume lettered on the spine 'Llenorion Lleyn ac Eifionydd' and described in the old typewritten handlist of Cwrtmawr Manuscripts as 'Llyfr Cywyddau etc. R. Llys Padrig. etc. fol.' The first part is in an early nineteenth century hand or hands (watermarks 1803 and 1804) and contains a list of sheriffs for Caernarvonshire to 1796; a list of arms; and 'cywyddau', etc. by Rhisiart Cynwal, Gruffydd Phylip, Sion Dafydd Las o Nanau, Owen Gruffydd, Lewis Menai, Ieuan Tew, Sion Tudur, Sion Phylip, Edmwnd Prys, Ieuan Llwyd, Gruffydd Hafren and Watcin Clywedog. The remainder of the manuscript (from p. 56 to the end) is almost entirely of later date and is written in the autograph of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') and others; this section includes 'cywyddau', 'englynion', etc. by some of the poets already mentioned and by Ffoulk Wyn 'yn enw Owen Madryn y Crwner', Owain Waed Da, W[illiam] Llyn, Evan ap Tudur Penllyn, Howel ap Feinallt, Morys ap Ifan ap Einion o Lyn, Owain ap Llewelyn ap y Moel, Gruffydd Grug, Dafydd Llwyd ap Llywelyn ap Gruffydd o Fathafarn, Robin y prydydd bach, Huw Pennant, Sion Cain, Iolo Goch, Sion Brwynog (incomplete), Huw Llyn, Syr Dafydd Trefor, Ieuan ap Madog ap Dafydd, Tudur Penllyn, [Lewis Môn] (beginning only), Hugh ap Risiart ap Dd, Morys Dwyfech, Cadwaladr Gruffydd, Gruffydd Bodwrdda, Rowland Hugh, Lewis Glynn, Dafydd Namor [sic] o blwy Beddgelert, Howel Ceiriog, Wiliam Cynwal, D. An exercise-book marked on the first page 'Copy No. 16' containing transcripts probably by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') of poetry by Evan Pritchard ('Ieuan Lleyn'; 1769-1832), with one or two items by John Roberts ('Sion Lleyn'), W[illia]m T[h]omas [?1790-1861] and William Williams. The final item ('Cywydd St. Cowrda' by [Hywel Rheinallt]) has no name appended to it and is incomplete. The poems appear to have been transcribed in separate sections and put together later.

There is a typewritten list of contents at the beginning and the volume also contains a letter, [19]07, from T[homas] Roberts, Borth Fechan, Portmadoc to Mr [J. H.] Davies (returning the transcripts of the Dafydd Nanmor poems).

An early eighteenth century miscellany, with later additions, containing recipes in English; a herbal in Welsh, with 'englynion' in praise of herbs by William Cynwall, Huw llun, Rhys Iorwerth fynglwyd, Gryffith ap Efan, Dr. Richard Dafis ('Esgob Dewi'), Sion ap Sion, Sion Tudur, Howel borthor ('o'r Trallwng yn mhowys'), Thomas Efans (1619), etc; 'Brenin yn yr hên amser a ddyfeisiodd i ddeuddeg oi wyr ddoydyd 12 gair gwir dan eu perigl'; 'gofyn a wnaeth y saith wyr doethion iw gilidd. Pa ryw ddaioni ore ar ddyn ...'; 'y pethau a berthyn ar wr'; Welsh proverbs; 'Dysg i adnabod y lleuad newydd', 'I gael y Pasc tros byth', 'I gael difieu cablyd', 'I gael y Pasc byth', 'I gael newid y lleuad', and 'I wybod oed y lleuad', 'Tair Sir ar ddeg o gymru au Trefydd au dinasoedd au Cymydau, au heglwysydd' ('Diwedd Ebrill 10. 1722'); 'Trioedd mab y Crinwas'; 'Triodd [sic] yr usuriwr'; the story of 'Adar Llwch Gwin'; 'y Pedair Camp ar hugain', etc. The leather cover is blind tooled 'Ex Dono Edvardi Humphrey Anno Domni 1661', but there is no evidence to show whether or not this inscription refers to the present volume.
