Appointments of Deputy Lieutenant and Keeper of the Rolls

Appointments of various members of the Pryse and Loveden families to the positions of Deputy Liuetenant and Keeper of the Rolls in Cardiganshire. The indiviuals concerned are Sir Richard Pryse, 1607, Edward Loveden Loveden, 1779 and speculatively 1787, Edward Lewis Pryse, 1857, and Pryse Loveden (later Sir Pryse Pryse), 1859.

Wills and executors’ accounts of various members of the Owen and Ormsby Gore families of Brogyntyn, of their Maurice ancestors, and of the Godolphin and Lyster families who were linked to them by marriage. The files contain the wills of Dame Ellin Eure, 1626, miscellaneous Owen, Ormsby Gore, Godolphin and Lyster family members, 1698-1826, William Owen, 1767 (Watermark 1804), Ellen Owen, 1802, Margaret Ormsby [1806], and William Ormsby Gore, 1860.

Cases of John Pryse, Thomas Pryse, John Pughe Pryse and Walter Pryse

Papers deriving from lawsuits and other legal matters involving John Pryse of Glanmeryn, Montgomeryshire, his son Thomas Pryse of Gogerddan, Thomas’s son John Pughe Pryse, and Walter Pryse [of Painswick], [1712x1717] -1755, and office copies, 1860. The most substantial of these concern a dispute between Walter Pryse and Lord Lisburne of Trawsgoed over the boundaries of Grogwynion lead mine, 1741-1751. Other files relate to the inheritance of the Gogerddan estate, 1720, 1749-1754, disputes over property and trespass in Llanglydwen, Carmarthenshire, [1712x1717]] and Llanbadarn Fawr, Cardiganshire, 1739-1744, and cases between John Pughe Pryse and his mother pertaining to his inheritance of the Gogerddan estate, 1753-1755. There are also two items of interest relating to the town of Aberystwyth, one being the case against William James for usurping the office of mayor, 1731, the other concerning the custom of suit of mill at Our Lady’s Mill, 1743-1744

Tenancy agreements and other documents found with them, comprising a file of arbitration agreements and valuations, a list of agreements signed by Mr Loveden, relating to properties in the parishes of Eglwys-fach, Llanbadarn Fawr, Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn, Llangynfelyn and Machynlleth, and a survey of delapidations at the Gogerddan Arms, Llanbadarn Fawr, 1861.

Ore weighing tickets from the mines of Allt y Crib, Blaen Ceulan, Camdwr Mawr, Cardigan Consols mine, Cwmbrwyno, Cwmerfyn, Cwmsebon, Darren, Eaglebrook, Esgair Hir, Loveden United mine, Ponterwyd and Taliesin, belonging to the Gogerddan estate, mainly within the manor of Genau’r-glyn, Cardiganshire, and at Grogwynion near Llanafan, 1850-1862.

Miscellaneous Cardiganshire election papers

Several miscellaneous bundles and various separate items relating mainly to elections in Cardiganshire, in which members of the Pryse family were either candidates or supporters, [1690]-1862 (Mainly 1770-1862). Some of the bundles incorporate burgess lists from various parishes in Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. Official documents and letters supply information about the constitution of the boroughs of Cardigan and Lampeter in the eighteenth century. Other papers include a rental of Mabws to prove Richard Lloyd’s qualification [1741]; election notices, an address to Pembrokeshire freeholders, 1811, bills of expenses, the state of the poll and other papers relating to specific elections in 1812 and 1816; a possible canvassing book [pre-1829]; evidence concerning the theft of the Aberystwyth poll books in the contested election between Pryse Pryse and John Scandrett Harford; 1841, and election literature, 1841-1849.
