Thank you for your letters. From the beginning with the patronage and support of Rai Chitamdas, Maharajah Janki Rai and RaeRang Lal, I was in the service of Nawab Mahabatjang Bahadur. During this period I performed no other duties but to work hard and manage the state. In the beginning when the Prince came from Lucknow I wrote to Rajah Ram Narayan that the Prince was marching towards this area and whether I, with my army, should march from here and join him at Bhojpur. At that time Maharajah Sahib sent Murlidahr with his army to Laghai and he himself delayed coming here. Meanwhile the Emperor had moved from Allahabad to this area. I again wrote to Ram Narayan that the Prince was coming this way and what action to take. He replied that I should go and see the Emperor while he would himself go and meet the Prince. I had no option but to follow his advice and went to see the Emperor
When I reached the banks of river Son I was joined by Nawab Muhammad Quli Khan who listened to the whole story. Later Muhammad Shakir presented the questions and answers of Maharajah Ram Narayan to Nawab Quli Khan. After all negotiations were postponed the Maharajah Ram Narayan went to meet the King at Phulwari. The Maharajah asked Nawab Quli Khan to recommend to the Emperor to assign the vice regency and Governorship of Bihar to him but the Nawab did not approve this request. Two days later the royal army besieged his fortress and the battle stated. I was at that time at Begumpurah. From Lot I came to Azimabad - a fact that could be verified to you by anyone. From the beginning until now I have acted only on the advice of Maharajah Ram Narayan. At the time Nawab Siraj al-Daulah was martyred I was in the service of the Maharajah at Azimabad. In spite of the fact Mir Kazim was also at Azimabad I did not meet him. Last year when Nawab Jafar Ali Khan came to Azimabad I contacted his staff to pay him a visit but Murlidhar and Maharajah Ram Narayan opposed this move. Now compelled by their actions I am writing to you for help

Received your letter, along with copy of a shuqqah [royal order] from His Highness. It is evident that you were very surprised and dismayed to read the text of the shuqqah. You wished that I and Rajah Ram Narayan should have endeavoured to settle the case of saltpetre locally and if this was not possible, or if there was any unnecessary delay, only then we should have marched along with our army towards Calcutta. And that should convey this message to the aforesaid rajah. I have conveyed the essence, meaning and gist of all what you have asked me to do to. I, along with the aforesaid rajah, went to see His Highness in the evening. His Highness gave us a copy of your shuqqah to read and we discussed the contents of this shuqqah at length. It is evident from this document that during the life of Mahabatjang, because of the unjust treatment of the army and wars that followed, it was agreed that the Company will purchase 50,000 maund; Rajah Ram Naryan would provide one fifth of this amount; in addition four and five thousand maund would be received from us so that the total will be fifteen thousand maunds.
Enclosure 1: After receiving the unjustified accusations of Mr Barton I had no option but to call a meeting of the elders and mahajans of the city to discuss and resolve this matter. As a result, a delegation of six people was sent to the aforesaid person and whatever dialogue took place between the two parties it was duly written and signed and sealed both by His Highness and members of the committee as well as a representative of Jagat Seth and the mahajans of the city. The original document was sent to Murshidabad and a copy of this document with attestation by His Highness is being sent to you [Clive] for information. The more I show my lamentation the more he gets ready for enmity and civil war so that he can defame me and blame me for everything.
Enclosure 2: To Clive: Janab alamiyan maab. I was very pleased and satisfied with the reply to the petition of Rajah Debi Singh and went to Podinah. In spite of the fact that Mr. Barton had received a parwanah he sent me a message through Munshi Siraj and asked me to appear before a court and whatever answer I gave to their interrogation these were all recorded and the papers were then signed by the people present in the court and their seals affixed. Later on they ordered me to put all my assistants and agents on a wooden horse to disgrace them before the public. As a consequence, no one wanted to work for me as either an assistant or agent. The result was that thousands of people are now gathering around my residence and making a hue and cry for the lacs of rupees I owe to them. As whatever I own belongs to the Company and I myself am a servant of the company I am therefore informing the Council of the state of affairs and request them to send a parwanah to Mr. Barton that he should pay proper attention to the agents and the public at large and should not oppress the inhabitants for the sake of trade.

As Raja Chatar Dhari Singh has arrived here for paying his respect, and it is necessary that he does this, it is not advisable that you take the journey and reach here by rapid and long distance coaches. Therefore, I suggest that you let me know the name of the place you are staying at present so that I reach there to meet you. I will do whatever we decide among ourselves during this meeting

In the past Rajah Ram Narayan has sent to me a number of delegations to seek permission to meet the Prince. Later, Babu Murli Dahr also insisted on meeting the Prince. Rajah Ram Narayan came to Phulwari for this purpose but because of his previous conduct leading to the murder of Nawab Siraj al-Daulah it was not possible to make any progress in this matter. In order to accomplish his evil designs he later sent Nawab Mir Muhammad Jafar Ali Khan's younger brother, Mir Muhammad Kazim Khan who lives in Azimabad. Last year he came with a parvanah from the Nawab and insisted upon seeing the Prince. A number of courtiers were against this but he managed to present himself before the Prince. Now that the Prince has again arrived in this province it was considered necessary to inform you about his arrival. Some of the zamindars / landholders and the Rajputs are unfaithful people. They are like someone who sells barley disguised as wheat. Their complaints to you against us are nothing but fabrications. I entreat you to look into this matter carefully and find out the truth and let us know what you decide. Please convey my greetings to Nand Kumar
