Biographical history

In the beginning, there were forty five or so members of the English Language Section of the Academi and membership was by invitation only. Full members were eligible to sit on the Executive Committee which was the Academi's policy making group, and were elected at the Academi's Annual General Meetings. The constitution stated that full membership was restricted to a 100. A second tier of membership, that of associate, was established in 1979 and by 1988, consisted of 400 associate members who paid an annual fee. In 1988, a tier of fellowships was established; fellows were few in number and held an honourary position which was offered for outstanding contribution to the literature of Wales over a number of years.
