A memorandum book of Robert Griffith, vicar of Darowen and justice of the peace for Montgomeryshire, consisting primarily of copies and/or drafts of warrants, parochial settlements, etc., 1780-9, signed by Griffith, and of correspondence with Rob[ert] Jones, Dolwenith, [Rev.] R[ichard] Ellis, Gwynfryn [Llanystumdwy], etc., 1788 (a lawsuit between the two divisions of the parish of Llanllyfni touching rights of common on Rhos y las Mountain), Humphrey Jones, Penrallt, Machynlleth, 1788-9 (the death of Dr Edwards, the hiring of a servant, rejoicings at Darowen to celebrate the King's recovery from his illness, an invitation), Rev. Dr [Robert] Edwards, Machynlleth and Llanwrin, 1786-8, (Robert Griffith's assessment return, the appointment of a successor to David Jones, a gift of ducks), John Edwards, Machynlleth, 1787-9 (a loan to Mr. Tamberlain, a recovery from illness), Bulkeley Hatchet, Lee, Salop, undated (the letting of Rhywgoch [Darowen]), Rev. [Richard] Nanney at Llwyn, Dolgelle, 1788 (a request on behalf of a tenant), 'A.B.' (anonymous writer), Oxford, 1788 (accusations against Robert Griffith of immorality and harbouring in his house 'women of bad fame'), John Owen, Penrhos, Guilsfield, 1788 (a request for a living in South Wales for Robert Griffith's nephew, Rice Jones of Blaenau, near Dolgelle), etc., and of miscellaneous documents such as a complaint of Robert Griffith for non-payment of Easter duties, 1787, and tithe arrears and other accounts of Darowen, 1787-8. Accompanying the transcripts and drafts are copious relevant quotations from law books, together with other extracts under such titles as 'The General Principles of Government' and 'The Principles and Causes of Human Actions'. Pasted on the inside upper cover is an invoice-head of Thos Brighouse, Holywell showing an engraving of [St. Winifred's Well].
