Scope and content

Accounts of lead and copper ores produced from Esgair Hir, Esgair Fraith, Cwmsymlog, Island Mine, Darren ‘Vaught’ and various other mines on the Gogerddan estate in the manor of Genau’r-glyn, from Grogwynion near Llanafan, Cardiganshire, and from several quarries on the Gogerddan estate, 1668-1918. The accounts provide much information about the extraction, commercial value, transport and sale of ores, particularly in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Notable figures in Cardiganhire include Sir Humphrey Mackworth, 1715, Chauncy Townsend, 1760-1777, and Job Sheldon, 1795-1803. Companies include the Company of Mine Adventurers and the Flintshire Company, 1715-1788. Several of the files contain miscellaneous accounts of the ore production, rents, disbursements, duty and royalties. Others comprise bills of loading on board ships bound for Swansea, 1750-1843; an ore weighing book, 1754-1769; stores at Llywernog, 1801; Claridge’s meat supplies to the New Mine, 1839; quarry accounts from Penglais, 1850, and Llettyllwyd and Frongoch, 1881-1884; and silica production at Ynyslas, 1918. Some files include covering letters with the accounts.
