Scope and content

A notebook containing copies and extracts, compiled by J. H. Canning in 1921, from several sources, arranged in four sections: p. 1 The first section is entitled 'Catholicity a hundred years ago in Glamorgan & Monmouthshire', by the Rt Rev. George Ambrose Burton, Bishop of Clifton; p. 53 The second section comprises a historical introduction and transcription of 'The Catholic Registers of Perthir in the County of Monmouth, 1758-1818', from Miscellanea I of the Catholic Record Society's publications, contributed by J. H. Matthews 1905. Contents of the registers may be summarised briefly, as follows: p. 61 The 'Old Register Book,' containing miscellaneous records in irregular order, mainly baptisms, 1758-99, but with several earlier entries, dating as far back as 1710; p. 112 Confirmations at Perth-hir (Perthir), 1808, 1812, 1818; p. 114 Baptismal entries, 1760-3, from the 1837 copy of the Perth-hir register; p. 118 Births and baptisms, 1799-1818, from the 'Latter Register of the Mission of Perthir'. For an index see MS 4 below; p 133 The third section consists of 'Additions and Corrections to the Perthir Registers,' taken from Catholic Record Society publications, volume IX; p. 141 The fourth section is entitled 'An Abstract of Several Examinations taken upon Oath in the Counties of Monmouth and Hereford, 1680', described as 'copied verbatim from the original by J. H. Canning.' It consists of evidence presented to a Committee at the House of Commons by John Arnold and John Scudamore, "to prevent the Growth and Increase of Popery".
