Biographical history
The Rev. John Tibbots, B.A. (c. 1677-1735), son of Richard Tybbotte of Abergynolwyn, Merioneth, was Vicar of Darowen, Montgomeryshire, from 1704 to his death in 1735. His daughter Lowry married the Rev. Richard Pugh[e], son of Richard (d. 1728) and Mary Pughe (d. 1741) of Cwmllowi, Darowen. Their only child, Dr Richard Pughe (fl. 1751-1783), was apprenticed to a surgeon in Wem, Shropshire, for seven years from 1751 and then practiced as a surgeon and apothecary in Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire. He later retired to Llanegryn and then Abergynolwyn, Merioneth. He married Mary Tibbot of Aberhirddowen, Merioneth, and they had two sons, the eldest of which was the Rev. Richard Pughe (1762-1837), curate of Llanegryn and Rector of Llanfrothen. He and his wife, Elizabeth Davies of Llanegryn, had nine children. The second of their sons was Dr Robert Pughe (1794-1837) who was apprenticed to an apothecary in Dolgellau for seven years before becoming a medical student at St Thomas's and Guy's Hospitals, London, from where he qualified on 15 May 1817. In 1819 he became House Apothecary at Bangor Dispensary, where he remained until his death on 14 April 1837.
Archival history
At some point following the death of Robert Pughe the manuscripts appear to have been deposited in the library at Ynysfor, Llanfrothen, home to Evan Jones (1793-1853), widow of Robert's sister Jane (1796-1836). NLW MSS 23069-70B were sold to Dafydd Hughes, Llandudno, bookseller, who sold them on to Emyr Wyn Jones in about 1992. At some point NLW MSS 23956-7B were also acquired from Ynysfor by Dafydd Hughes, whose handwriting appears in both volumes.
