Scope and content
Title deeds and family and estate papers belonging to the Rug estate near Corwen, Merioneth, which became linked with Gogerddan in the mid-eighteenth century via the Pughe family of Mathafarn (q.v.). Rowland Pughe had married Elizabeth Salesbury of Rug, c. 1721, and their daughter, Maria Charlotta, married Thomas Pryse of Gogerddan [c. 1738] The papers
mainly concern the Salesbury family of Rug, and those related to them by marriage, such as Thelwall of Plas y Ward, Goodman of Abenbury and Pughe of Mathafarn. The title deeds, 1529-1717, refer to properties mainly in Corwen, Gwyddelwern and Llansanffraid Glyndyfrdwy, together with a few other locations in Wales and England. The family and estate papers, 1566-[1745] include family settlements, very few wills, mortgages, rentals and a sixteenth century inquisition into rents, accounts, a small number of legal papers, and letters.
