Miscellaneous documents, [early 18 cent.]-1761, relating to Monmouthshire, probably collected by Major H. J. Lloyd-Johnes; and related papers, [mid 20 cent.].
They comprise a letter, [early 18 cent.], from Thomas Edwards of Monmouth to William Blathwayt, politician, at Whitehall, concerning the nomination of William Blethyn as sheriff of Monmouthshire (ff. 180-181), with a letter, 28 January 1955, from Myers & Co. (Booksellers), London, offering the letter for sale to H. J. Lloyd-Johnes (f. 182); a licence, 29 December 1761, sent to the Governors of Queen Anne's Bounty, granted by John Ewer, bishop of Llandaff, to John Williams, BA, to perform the office of curate at Penterry, Monmouthshire (ff. 183-184); and a quitclaim, 2 May 1711, by Robert Bayley of St Pierre, Monmouthshire, to Henry Scudamore of Treworgan, Herefordshire (f. 185), with a transcript, [mid 20 cent.] (f. 186).

Monmouthshire miscellanea

Fifty-three files of unbound material accumulated by Bradney during the preparation of A History of Monmouthshire and containing press and proof copies, transcripts and abstracts of, and extracts from, manuscripts, deeds and documents, holograph and autograph letters, pedigrees and genealogical notes, press cuttings, etc., generally arranged under parishes. Much of the material is in the autographs of friends and official copyists. This volume contains a draft of a general history of Monmouthshire; letters, 1904-1930; and miscellaneous notes, including extracts relating to the diocese of Llandaff from the returns in the William Salt Library, Stafford, of the religious census of Archbishop Gilbert Sheldon, 1676, a transcript of the Association Oath Roll for the county, 1696, a list of Baptist chapels and preaching stations in the county, 1823, and lists of peers, baronets, lords lieutenant, sheriffs, magistrates, gentry, officers of the Royal Monmouth Militia, Members of Parliament, etc.

'Notes of old Papers found under the Floor of the Attic at the Parrot Inn, Cross Street, Abergavenny, January, 1908'. They include writs of praecipe to the sheriff of Monmouthshire, 1666/7?-1673/4; letters from William Morgan from Lansoare, Langattocke iuxta Carlyon, to Mr. [Thomas?] Gunter at Carlyon, 1 May, [16]68, from Piers Butler to Mr. Thomas Gunter, attorney-at-law, Abergavenny, 16 May, [16]74, from Tho. Pim?, London, to Mrs. Katherin Williams of Abergaveni, 16 April, 1697, etc.; an order of the Committee for Compounding the estates of Recusants and Malignants in respect of the estate of Thomas Gunter of Abergavenny, recusant, in the parishes of Penrhos and Abergavenny, c. 1650; receipts to members of the Gunter family and others, 1688-1720; fragments of seventeenth and early eighteenth century letters, legal papers, accounts, music, and poetry; and references to letters addressed to Mrs. Bellamy who 'apparently lived in this house in the early forties'. The notes are written on the dorse of examination scripts of the Calvinistic Methodist Sunday Schools Union, 1902. Also included in the manuscript is a note on the preaching of Daniel Rowland, Methodist cleric, of Llangeitho, Cardiganshire.

A volume lettered on the outside, upper cover 'Sheriffs of Monmouthshire, 1541 and subsequently', and containing a record of the sheriffs of Monmouthshire, 1541-1937, with notes on their armorial bearings. The volume was compiled in 1937, by William Gardner of Newport, on the instructions of Frederick Pring Robjent, of Fields House, Newport, sheriff of the county, 1937-1938, whose armorial bearings (emblazoned) appear at the beginning of the volume.
