Timothy Lewis (1877-1958), Welsh literary scholar, was born in Efail-wen, Cilymaenllwyd, Pembrokeshire. He graduated from University College, Cardiff, in 1904, and went on to undertake research into early Welsh at Manchester and Berlin. He joined the University College, Aberystwyth, in 1910 as assistant lecturer and later became reader in Celtic Palaeography. He served in the Royal Artillery in France, 1915-1918. Timothy Lewis married Nellie Myfanwy Evans (1885-1968) in 1910, and had a son and a daughter.

The main body of papers was donated to the National Library of Wales by his widow, Mrs Nellie Lewis, Aberystwyth, in 1959. In addition, various items were donated by, and purchased from, Timothy Lewis between 1953 and 1958.

Papers of Timothy Lewis, 1853-1955, including works by him, transcripts of manuscripts of Welsh literature and Welsh law, and correspondence. The archive also comprises substantial groups of the papers of his friend, J. Gwenogvryn Evans (1852-1930), which mainly consist of transcripts of manuscripts and correspondence; and of his father-in-law, Beriah Gwynfe Evans (1848-1927), including works by him, and letters.

Gwenogvryn Evans's lectures on palaeography at the University of Manchester, 1906-7, his registration book in the University of Berlin, 1908-9, and a bibliography of material relating to the history of Wales by Professor E. A. Lewis, 1900 (NLW MS 16394D); the original manuscripts of two articles contributed by Timothy Lewis to Aberystwyth Studies, on 'St. Cadvan's Stone, Towyn' (NLW MS 6879B), and 'The Evolution of the Welsh Home' (NLW MS 6880E); a manuscript copy of his review, in Zeitschrift für Ortsnamenforschung, 1930, of Enwau Lleoedd Sir Gaernarfon by Professor J. Lloyd Jones, Dublin (NLW MS 6749C); and the author's copy-manuscript and typescript of his book, Beirdd a Bardd-rin Cymru Fu, (Aberystwyth, 1929) (NLW MS 6435E).
