Scope and content
Two vols of Welsh poetry, lettered on the spine 'Gwaith Prydyddion Morgannwg'. The binding of the two vols is identical, and the pagination is continuous. They contain 'cywyddau', etc. transcribed in 1793 by the Rev. John Evans, Caira, vicar of Newport, co. Mon., from an older but imperfect MS which may since have been lost. The poems were numbered in the original MS and these numbers are given in the transcript although the poems are not in the same order. The poets whose work is represented are not confined to co. Glam. The name 'Jn: Evans Caira 13th Novr. 1806' occurs on the fly-leaf of both vols and both are stamped 'Llanwern'. The following note occurs on p. 597:. '.... This is the last ode in the manuscript which was transcribed at Caira near Newport in Monmouth-shire October the 3d 1793. 'By the Revd Mr Evans vicar of Newport Am FAS late Fellow of Worcester College Oxon.'. According to Alumni Oxoniensis he was of Bassaleg, co. Mon., and was vicar of Newport from 1783 until his death in 1822. Towards the end of his life he appears to have lived at Caerleon and he was buried at Llangattock-juxta-Caerleon on July 9 1822, aged 69 years. [There is a letter from the Rev. John Evans in NLW MS 13224 B (Mysevin MS 4), 127.].
