A bound vol. of sermons in MS lettered on the spine 'M. S. Sacramental Sermons, James Bell, 1727'. The sermons were preached at Brechine, Montrose, Logie, etc. in 1727. A note in pencil inside the front cover reads 'Ex Stevenson Library 2790 - 11/. Binding by Henderson & Bissett, Edinburgh, or Carse, of Glasgow.'. English.

Two vols of Welsh poetry, lettered on the spine 'Gwaith Prydyddion Morgannwg'. The binding of the two vols is identical, and the pagination is continuous. They contain 'cywyddau', etc. transcribed in 1793 by the Rev. John Evans, Caira, vicar of Newport, co. Mon., from an older but imperfect MS which may since have been lost. The poems were numbered in the original MS and these numbers are given in the transcript although the poems are not in the same order. The poets whose work is represented are not confined to co. Glam. The name 'Jn: Evans Caira 13th Novr. 1806' occurs on the fly-leaf of both vols and both are stamped 'Llanwern'. The following note occurs on p. 597:. '.... This is the last ode in the manuscript which was transcribed at Caira near Newport in Monmouth-shire October the 3d 1793. 'By the Revd Mr Evans vicar of Newport Am FAS late Fellow of Worcester College Oxon.'. According to Alumni Oxoniensis he was of Bassaleg, co. Mon., and was vicar of Newport from 1783 until his death in 1822. Towards the end of his life he appears to have lived at Caerleon and he was buried at Llangattock-juxta-Caerleon on July 9 1822, aged 69 years. [There is a letter from the Rev. John Evans in NLW MS 13224 B (Mysevin MS 4), 127.].
A journal (?copy) of a voyage from London to Capetown, 1831-2, on board the barque 'Science' of Scarbro [sic] bound for Hobart's Town [Tasmania]. The writer of the journal states 'We have received letters from Lord Goderich to the Secretaries of the Australian Colonies, sanctioning their granting us leave to visit the Convicts remaining under the special care of Government'. A note in pencil by J. R. Hughes in 1953 reads 'Voyage to Africa & Australia by James (?) Backhouse of York in the service of Friends (Quakers). Given to me by Mrs Mabel Backhouse (84) Caer Tegla Arthog Merioneth'. (A James Backhouse, 1794-1869, is described as 'minister of Society of Friends 1824; missionary to Australia and South Africa, 1831-41'. See Frederic Boase, Modern English Biography, vol. 1, p. 120.). Incomplete.

Jones, Cerrig-y-drudion, Highway Surveyor for Uwchaled Rural District, in 1890 by Evan Jones, the son-in-law of Robert Edwards. (See also p. 349.).
'Y Crynwyr yng Nghymru. Extracts from the Records of the Society of Friends in South Wales, North Wales & The Border', transcribed by J. R. Hughes. This is the first of two vols.
Disbursements of surveyors of the highways in the township of Prestatyn in the parish of Meliden, co. Flint, 1857-1868, with some printed items, 1895-1914, relating to Whitford [co. Flint] Charities, including a pamphlet in English and Welsh by E. Pan Jones, 1896, entitled Whitford Poor's Allotments (Tir Tlodion Plwyf Whitford). A note in pencil by J. R. Hughes reads: 'Daeth y cofod [sic] hwn oddiwrth teulu Edmund Hunt o Ogledd Fflint ....'. [Edmund Hunt was surveyor of the highways in the township of Prestatyn, 1857-8, and later chairman of the vestry.].
A vol. containing cuttings of a series of articles entitled 'Reminiscences of an Octogenarian' by Owen Williams, Cardigan, which appeared in the Cardigan & Tivy-Side Advertiser [Jan. 31 - June 20 1947], with a letter from Owen Williams, 1947. There is also a printed copy of a poem by E. Glyn Cox, Ammanford, "Martyrs of the Dust".

An exercise-book containing transcripts by J. R. Hughes of,
(A) 'Englynion yr Eiry (Eira)' beginning 'Eira mynydd, Brith brynniau', from a Morgan Llwyd MS in the Cardiff Central Library. (B) 'Hen Grynwyr y Plwyf', (?) part of an essay entitled 'Hanes Plwyf Llanfor. Y Traethawd Buddugol yn Eisteddfod y Bala Gorphenaf 13eg 1893 gan Mr J. H. Roberts, Tyn'ycoed, Bala'. The essay or extract, which Mr Hughes suggests may be a copy of the original, was lent to Mrs Lilian James, Bala, and by her in turn to Mr J. R. Hughes in 1953.
A file containing loose papers (correspondence, leaflets, etc.). There are references to the Tryweryn Scheme and to various Annual General Meetings for Wales of the Society of Friends, and also some personal items (business letters concerning property).
A transcript made by J. R. Hughes, from the original record, of 'The Quakers in Wales: Yearly Meeting Minute Book from 1682 to 1797, Account of Sufferings from 1682 to 1791'. [In point of fact the actual order is reversed, and the Account of Sufferings comes first (pp. 2-214 in the transcript) and is followed by the Minute Book of the Yearly Meeting for Wales (pp. 228-452). The original record appears to be in the safe keeping of the South Wales Monthly Meeting.] The transcript was begun in Oct. 1945 and completed in Oct. 1947 (see p. 452, 'Nodyn Personol'). On p. 215 is 'a copy of a loose sheet (foolscap size) found in Jonathan Lloyd's possession 22.7.1950' containing 'The Sufferings of Friends in Wales on Accot of Tithes &c in ye year 1762'. Opposite (p. 216) is the following note in pencil: 'Sufferings not entered in the Record from 1706-1719 - although referred to as received in the minutes of the Y. M. (Wedi myned ar goll - mae'n debyg J. R. Hughes 1959).'. There are also some loose papers, including a copy (extracted) of the will of Thos Llewelyn of Southampton Street, Bloomsbury, LlD, proved with two codicils, 21 Aug. 1783, and a copy of the testimony of John Griffith to Robt Dudley concerning John Crook. (The same story is told by Frances Anne Budge in Annals of The Early Friends (Philadelphia, 1900), pp. 114-115.).
A small notebook containing a rough list of Quaker records at Stoke-on-Trent Meeting House, including some originally from Leek Meeting House. At the end is a copy of an 'Acct of the Hammersley Family buried at Bassford', etc.
Another notebook similar to No. 54, containing a few entries relating to Leek and Uttoxeter, 1944. Loose inside is a silhouette of William Maggs, a Quaker of Leek or district (18th cent.).
A cover containing correspondence, some printed items, and copies of a number of South Wales Monthly Meeting newsletters, 1945-1946 (duplicated), in which notes by J. R. Hughes on 'Historic Quaker Spots' (Quaker's Yard, Merthyr Tudful, Islaw'r Dref (or Sowdrey), Cardiff, Tref-y-Rhyg, and Neath Meeting House and Burial Ground) have been incorporated.
