Dannie Abse, considered to be one of the most notable Anglo-Welsh writers of the twentieth century, was born in Cardiff to Jewish parents, his elder brother being Labour politician and lawyer Leo Abse (1917-2008). Following graduation from medical school, Abse worked for thirty years as a physician in a chest clinic.
