Newport estate reports (Habershon, Fawckner & Grove)

Files of reports by Habershon & Fawckner (Habershon, Fawckner & Groves from 1898) of surveys of properties in Newport and Pillgwenlli. Most of the reports seem to have been made with a view to a renewal of the lease of the property, and detail the repairs necessary before a renewal can be granted. Habershon & Fawckner were architects to the Tredegar Wharf estate (at least in 1896; see ANS 5/2, no. 73), although the Tredegar Wharf estate is not mentioned explicitely in these reports, as it is in the reports in ANS 4.

Newport estate collection books

Collection books of the Newport Rents Department and its predecessors. -- Collection books do not usually survive to the same extent as other series of books, as they do not contain anything that was not subsequently copied into the rentals and the ledgers. The surviving Newport estate collection books start later, and have larger gaps, than these other series of books. A ground rent collection book, 1872-1881 (ANA 2/1), and the reserved rent collection book no. 5, 1894-1897 (ANA 2/2), are all that survive from the 19th century. -- The earliest surviving Newport rents department collection books, 1908-1928 (ANA 2/3-18), were originally numbered 10-25, suggesting at least eight lost books. There is then another gap until 1937 (ANA 2/19), by which time the collection books have become annual volumes. The 1941 volume (ANA 2/23) is filled up with Jan.-March 1942, no doubt due to war-time austerity measures. The next volume is much less substantial, and sets the pattern for successive collection books, 1942-1955 (ANA 2/24-36), originally numbered N 1-13. -- On 4 Oct. 1955 a gross rent balance of £1976 16s. 11d. was forwarded from ANA 2/36 to 'Book 14', which is not found, and which may have been transferred to the Eagle Star Insurance Company on the sale of the estate in 1956.

Other Newport estate accounts

Miscellaneous Newport estate accounts, including Tredegar Wharf Company accounts, 1807-1855, wharfage accounts, 1869-1885, railway tolls, 1880-1893, wages books, 1901-1920, tonnage return ledgers, 1913-1927, cattle market accounts, 1914, and wayleave and hauling accounts, 1919-1942.

Cardiff ground rent audit books

The settled accounts of Henry John Davis (1877-1902), G. P. Mitchell Jones (1903-1918), John Ireland Storrar (1919-1940) and their successors with Lord Tredegar and the trustees of the Tredegar settled estates for the Cardiff and Pontypridd ground rents, along with miscellaneous receipts and promiscuous payments. This series of audit books was initiated in 1877, when the Cardiff and Pontypridd ground rents were taken out of the Glamorgan estate audit books (AGR 3), which continued as the Glamorgan agricultural estate audit books. -- In 1877 the rental contained ground rents in Cardiff, Tredegarville, Oakville, Roath, Splottlands and Newbridge (later Pontypridd); ground rents in Llanwynno were added in 1878, South Splottlands in 1883, Canton in 1887, Penylan in 1900, Llan Wood in 1906. There was no further change until 1920, when the Pontypridd, Llanwood and Llanwynno ground rents were transferred to a new series, the Glamorgan town estate audit books (AGR 5), and the books of the remaining Cardiff estate renamed 'Cardiff lease rent audit books'. The Glamorgan town series comes to an end in 1938, and in 1939 rents in Pontypridd, Eglwysilan, Gelli-gaer, Llys-faen, Rhyd-y-gwern, Peterston-super-montem, Rhydri and Whitchurch are added to the Cardiff books, which are renamed 'Glamorganshire town and Cardiff audit books'. -- The audit books for 1941-42 end with balances struck on the accounts, but the parties to the accounts are not named; the books for 1943-54 end simply with a summary of the rents, balanced with the total of rents according to the collection books, and lack the supplementary accounts or a balance struck. In 1949 the title of the books changes to reflect the change that they are no longer settled accounts, changing from 'audit book' to 'rental'. The book for 1952 was originally intitled '1950', and the series lacks a book for 1950. The series ends in 1954. -- In common with the other estates of the Tredegar estate, the Cardiff ground rents estate produced duplicate audit books, one for the estate and one for the agent, until the practice was abandoned, in the case of the Cardiff estate after 1890.

Glamorgan town estate audit books

Settled accounts of John Ireland Storrar (1920-1938) with Lord Tredegar (1920-1933) and the trustees of the Tredegar settled estates (1934-1938) for the rents of the Glamorgan town estate, and casual receipts and promiscuous payments. -- The Glamorgan town estate was created in 1920 out of premises in the parishes of Eglwysilan, Gelli-gaer, Llys-faen, Peterston-super-montem, Rhydri, Rhyd-y-gwern and Whitchurch that had previously been part of the Glamorgan estate (AGR 3), plus the Pontypridd ground rents, which until 1919 had been included with the Cardiff ground rents (AGR 4). Thereafter the remainder of the Glamorgan estate was called the Glamorgan agricultural estate. In 1939 the Pontypridd ground rents returned to the books of the Cardiff ground rents.

Glamorgan lease books

Although the lease books do not constitute an extensive series of estate records, they can provide some interesting information, including details of the lease, lessee (including successive lessees of the same property), the property concerned (often described in detail), the term of the lease and rents. With the exception of AGL 1/5, the entries in these volumes are frequently annotated and altered. There are references to ledgers, possibly the series of rent ledgers AGD 1-2.

Glamorgan mineral leases,

Glamorgan mineral leases other than coal leases, and including ironstone, limestone, building stone and clay. Coal leases are held separately at Tredegar AGL 3.
